Vitamin D not increasing

Radicalradiator · 16/12/2019 22:26

I have a fairly low Vitamin D level of around 48 so I started taking 5000 mg a day (highest dose) around 2 months ago. I had it tested again and it’s only 52. Any advice on how I can get this up?!

So tired!

Is it 5000iu you're taking rather than mg? If s you could up that dose, I'm taking 10000iu a day. Went from 60 to 210 in 6 months. Are you taking anything else with it?

Stupiddriver1 · 16/12/2019 22:38

Have you ever been tested for coeliac disease?

mindutopia · 16/12/2019 22:47

I took 8000iu a day and then one day a week I took 20,000iu as an extra boost.

Mine went from 51 to 96 in about 5 months.

You can take a higher dose, also make sure it’s decent quality and you’re taking it with food. It may just take a bit more time.

What form of supplement are you taking? I found the oil based drops worked far better than tablets.

notapizzaeater · 16/12/2019 23:06

Are you taking any co factors with it ? Vitamin K2 .? Magnesium ?

There's a good group on Facebook

SpoonBlender · 16/12/2019 23:06

It's currently considered that taking vit D doesn't do anything particularly useful unless you're low enough to have rickets (which you're not) - it's the process of getting vit D (ie sunshine on skin) that helps. Taking vit D just changes the numbers on the blood test.

On top of which, what the numbers should be are not well defined either. It's all a bit of a mess.

Lots of info and links to (actual science) studies here:

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/12/2019 23:42

Well @SpoonBlender from my personal experience I'd have to respectfully disagree with that research. I take 10,000 IU a day, with vitamin K and magnesium and on this dose can function pretty normally. If I stop taking the D I hurt everywhere and my fingers start clawing over, it hurts to have the fingers straight like a normal person.

So I would personally suggest you try a higher dose, but go by feel/function as much as the blood test numbers.

cakeandchampagne · 16/12/2019 23:52

@SpoonBlender Thanks for the link.

SpoonBlender · 17/12/2019 00:57

@CrotchetyQuaver Sure, studies are statistical things. Doesn't mean that dosing doesn't work for specific people, it means that it doesn't do much for most people.

Radicalradiator · 17/12/2019 09:43

Thanks for all the advice

@Lellochip yes I mean 5000iu!

I was wary of taking more than this as the NHS advice is that taking over this dose is harmful.

@Stupiddriver1 yes my doctor just tested for it as I have a folate deficiency too. I don’t have it though

I take tablets.

I might try and take magnesium with it too.

I take concentrace after every meal magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium
It’s the salts from the lake in Utah
Plus we gave three winter sunshine holidays a year
We are here now..will probably start supplementing in January till our next break in March
Fatigue is a lot better
Also been 6 months gf and df...so hopefully the good stuff is absorbing better now the inflammation has gone
Changed daily breakfast omelette to gf oat muesli..so getting daily helpings of nuts, seeds, dried fruits etc which hopefully are full of goodness
Elimination is now much better 👍

milkysmum · 05/01/2020 09:59

I have very low Vit D levels. After joining a group I learned I needed to be taking calcium, magnesium and zinc with the Vit D in order for it to be absorbed/ properly effective. I have just got these and an taking daily.
