I read them all avidly about 40 years ago and am rediscovering them via Charity shops atm.

One of my favourites was about a group of people living in a shared house, possibly a student house and there were letters written in green ink. I've had a google but can't find the name of the book. Any ideas please?

No spoilers please because I can only remember the murderer in a few and don't want to spoil the rest.

I love The Moving Finger as well Humphrey - especially the character of Megan, probably one of my favourites from all her books. Great stuff.

DrWAnker · 17/12/2019 20:21

Death on the Nile is one of my top films ever.
Love most of the tv adaptations, I used to watch the older ones with my Granny who leant me many of the books.
I really disliked the Channel 5 adaptation though, the actress who played her came. across all wrong I thought.

HumphreyCobblers · 17/12/2019 20:22

Yes, Megan's transformation! Just so romantic but entirely believable the way it is written.

tobee · 17/12/2019 20:42

Oh yes I enjoyed Evil Under the Sun. I've got the soundtrack; John Lanchberry's variations on Cole Porter. Maggie Smith playing the comedy beautifully. Great setting!

TrudyE · 17/12/2019 22:39

It is Hickery Dickery Dock. I'm a great fan. All books of hers are available on Audible. Give it a go. Trudy

Death Comes As The End is being made for the BBC - it was supposed to be being shown in 2019, but it doesn't look like it's going to make it. It's an unusual book, the only one of AC's that isn't set in the 20th century, it's in Thebes in 2000 BC. It's one of my favourite books, so I hope the adaptation is good - it's not by Sarah Phelps, so I'm hopeful!

Shushc · 18/12/2019 08:41

Yes Hickory Dickory Dock. All her books are brilliant! And if you get a chance to visit Greenway in Devon, it is a lovely insight into her world. Smile

Cineraria · 18/12/2019 09:29

Oh now I want to read them all again! I'll have to go charity shop delving soon or ask my mum to loan me a few of hers for a while. I remember reading them whenever I was off school ill.

I also really enjoyed "The 8:55 to Baghdad" by Andrew Eames about his journey inspired by her disappearance. It actually inspired me to visit Jordan and Syria, travelling on the Hejaz railway that he mentions seeing during his time in Damascus.

susiella · 18/12/2019 10:07

I think if Sarah Phelps has had a go at The Pale Horse I will be giving it a miss. I couldn't watch the last one she did, it was dire.

fedup21 · 18/12/2019 10:09

Love them all. My favourite is Sleeping Murder!

I thought the telly film (Joan Hickson) was also brilliant, though the more recent Marple remake where they changed the whole story (Gwennie and Helen-mother/stepmother) was appalling!

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 18/12/2019 10:30

Oooh yes @DrWAnker I agree about the Death on the Nile film. I don't like whatshisname's portrayal of Poirot in the context of the book, but as a stand-alone film it is great. That bit at the end where Mia Farrow confesses is just brilliant.

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 18/12/2019 10:31

Peter Ustinov!

fedup21 · 18/12/2019 10:58

Oh yes-Death on the Nile is fab!

Simon Mccorkindale, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow and many more!

burblish · 18/12/2019 11:08

Another massive Agatha Christie fan here! I agree her earlier books were generally better - you can tell she struggled to get the 60s and 70s vibe and “Postern of Fate” was just awful. A lot of my favourites have already been mentioned on this thread (inc “Curtain”, “The Hollow”, “And Then There Were None”, “Death Comes as the End” and “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd”) but I’m also particularly fond of “Crooked House”, “Hercule Poi tor’s Christmas” and “The Man in the Brown Suit”. The tv film adaptation of “The Man in the Brown Suit” was pretty dire but Simon Dutton was absolutely gorgeous in it as the eponymous character.

burblish · 18/12/2019 11:11

Poi tor?! Bloody autocorrect! How can it not recognise Hercule Poirot?!

flowery · 18/12/2019 11:16

I have all of them. My version of And Then There Were None is the original title, with a big red herring on the cover. I also have a first edition of my favourite- Murder of Roger Ackroyd- that DH bought me for our 10th wedding anniversary.

flowery · 18/12/2019 11:17

Drives me mad when TV and film adaptions go mad changing the story completely or bunging the wrong detective in a story that was perfectly fine without Angry

The Joan Hickson Sleeping Murder is great isn't it - it's so well-cast (well, all the JH series are I think).

The bit at the end with "dear Gwennie" alone in the house is just terrifying!! So good.

fedup21 · 18/12/2019 14:36

The bit at the end with "dear Gwennie" alone in the house is just terrifying!! So good.

Yes-so good!

I love the bit where she’s discovering stuff she wants done to the new house (Hillside?) is already there-poppies and cornflower wallpaper in the nursery and a door through to the other room!

I wonder if there are any AC films on over Xmas?!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/12/2019 14:59

Sleeping Murder is my absolute favourite and the BBC adaptation was fabulous. The version in ITV's "Marple" was a total travesty.

flowery · 18/12/2019 15:02

DH does an excellent impression of the perp in the BBC sleeping murder.... Grin

PrivateSpidey · 18/12/2019 15:14

Grin that I would like to see!

fedup your post about the Sleeping Murder wallpaper gave me a shiver! Such a good premise for a story.

I haven't visited Greenway although it's been on my bucket list for a while.

Am off to look up the Netflix film about her now!...

tobee · 18/12/2019 16:27

Don't shoot me but I quite liked the camped up Marple version of Sleeping Murder but hadn't read the original book at first and hadn't seen the Joan Hickson one in ages.

I couldn't stand most of the itv Marple series at first because it was all a bit rib nudging and I thought Joan Hickson was just right. On second viewing I'm less frothing at the mouthGrin

I liked the Sophia Myles/Aidan McCardle romance in the Marple Sleeping Murder!

On the continuing subject of Christie adaptations there have been some shockers over the years. Some of the American Helen Hayes one! Xmas Shock

Natsku · 18/12/2019 19:04

Love Agatha Christie. Hope that I will eventually read all her books (I'm rather limited as I live abroad so it's hard to come by her books except for the few they have in the library although I did buy online her autobiography and book about her time on archaeological digs)

I think I prefer the Marple ones to the Poirot ones but it's only a slight preference because I do like them all so much.

Picked up a set of her Westmacott books at a second hand shop but the problem when I read them was that I kept expecting a murder to happen Grin
