Would you cook plastic in an electric oven

I have a Sainsbury’s ready meal with instructions to pierce film and put in preheated oven. Has anyone done this - is it safe?
(I have a disability and would not be able to make this meal, hence ready meal. I know the nutritional value is lower, tastes worse and it is bad for the environment).

Yes - it's safe. I do it all the time. The plastic is designed to work at high temperatures.

Yes, some ready meal plastics are ok in the oven especially if it says on the instructions you can do it

Yip. The ready meal containers are oven safe.

I do it all the time, but always on a tray.

Difficultcustomer · 16/12/2019 19:45

Thanks all, yes it says to use an oven tray.

Why do you think it says to put it in an oven if it's not safe???? Weird question.

ohwheniknow · 16/12/2019 19:50

Ohh, yes, these plastics are fine. Microwaveable pots (like the Sistema ones) wouldn't be.

Difficultcustomer · 17/12/2019 01:47

@ jomaIone I didn’t notice that I could put it in the oven. I googled sand got lots of links to ready meals and a few stories of the plastic melting even though it was supposed to be oven proof. It was an old yahoo answers thread so I thought I’d ask on here.

If the meal has oven cook instructions that don't say to remove it from all packaging, then the plastic will be oven safe. I've eaten many an oven-heated ready meal with no problems.

It does need to go on a baking tray or something, and when you take it out let it sit for a couple of minutes before picking it up, because the plastic softens with heat.

Gas ovens are what I've had trouble with. They're prone to having hot spots that can actually melt the plastic a bit. Electric ovens are much better at keeping a consistent temperature inside.

It worked well so I’ll definitely put in the oven if there is a choice.
