When do goody bags stop at birthday parties?

Taking a couple of dc's friends out for a birthday meal in a couple of weeks. They are all turning 12, so will gift bags still be expected now they've left primary school? Don't want other parents to be cursing me if I do them and no else is. Smile

You can stop them.
People don't care about goodie bags anyway.

halcyondays · 16/12/2019 09:31

People don’t usually give them after primary school ime.

Mrsjayy · 16/12/2019 09:32

Yep once in high school they stop

Drizzzle · 16/12/2019 09:32

Depends on the child. How about giving them a small bok or bar of chocolate/bag of sweets instead?

PassMeAnotherCoffee · 16/12/2019 09:35

Way too old! I stopped long before the end of primary school.

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/12/2019 09:39

Depends on the school / what other parents do. Some in my DN’s school still do goody bags but as it’s a fairly posh private school, there tends to be pressure for the bags to contain expensive things — for example Nintendo Switches etc. As I’m a lazy bugger I usually just pop in vouchers for stuff like local horse riding / go karting / archery sessions etc. But I can easily spend £60 per bag so invitations are limited.

DS had his birthday recently at a venue and the organisers did the bag, which was a sweet cone and piece of cake. The kids seemed happy. If it was a party at home I would be more inclined to do a bag. For a secondary school kid though, just sweets, definitely!

venusandmars · 16/12/2019 11:05

ditch them, ditch the plastic!

sugarbum · 16/12/2019 11:10

yep no goody bags. I didn't do them at DS2 party - just a cake and a drink each (he just turned 10)

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/12/2019 11:19

Ds has just had his 12th birthday. I don't do goody bags anymore, they get a chocolate santa or a chocolate orange.

inwood · 16/12/2019 12:28

This time of year a chocolate Santa is perfect. They stop here after about y4/5 once the class party nightmares are over.

Drizzzle · 16/12/2019 14:07

Grumpy are you talking about the actual birthday present? If you are talking about the party favour/goody bag then what do the children get for their present?!

Eh?? A Nintendo switch for a guest...?

stoplickingthetelly · 16/12/2019 15:55

😮 at Nintendo switch in party bags!

katy1213 · 16/12/2019 15:55

£60 for a goody bag! Would like to announce that I am available and willing as a guest throughout the festive season ...

listsandbudgets · 16/12/2019 16:07

Tenpenceabag I wouldn't be at all surprised by the idea of a Nintendo Switch being given in a party bag at certain schools

My DN had a full scholarship to one of those schools in the mid to late 1990s. It was the time that digital camera were becoming more widely available and she got given a top quality one in a party bag... 4 weeks later she got another and gave it to her DB. She got invited to amazing parties - weekend with a few of your friends in top notch hotel in New York anyone (the flipping party bags came from Tiffanys)

So I would not be at all surprised if such schools have now moved to Switches in party bags
