Hiccups - a sure fire way to stop them!!!

Did anyone watch 24 Hours in A&E the other week when a nurse stopped the hiccups of a colleague? I tried it last night when my son had them and it really works, I couldn’t believe it. For those of you who didn’t see it this is how it works - you tell the person with hiccups that you are going to stop them , then carefully spell out their name on their forehead with your finger. The nurse said it works every time, I can only say it worked the one time I tried it. Would love to know if anyone else has tried it.

I havent tried that, but years and years ago I had them at work. A colleague turned to me and asked me an unrelated question that took me by surprise. It stopped me in my tracks and I said, why did you ask me that? She said, bet your hiccups have gone! And they had.

Must be to do with doing something strange that takes your attention from the hiccups?

Maykid · 14/12/2019 11:57

I agree that it is probably due to taking your attention away from the hiccups. When I tried it on my son I had no faith at all that it would work and was amazed it did.

My DD had a friend who said she always stopped hiccups by thinking of the word “pineapples.” We started trying it - and it’s surprising how often it works. Grin

I think someone asking your something strange or unexpected changes your breathing slightly?

Taking 7 sips of water at once (if that makes sense) works too as does drinking with your fingers in your ears.

Lovelylugs · 14/12/2019 12:03

Well if that doesn't work blocking your ears and drinking does definitely work. You'll need help from someone else or use a straw to drink.

Met an elderly man in hospital having an MRI for potential surgery - he'd had hiccups for 7 years! Doctors couldn't stop them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My favourite is offering the person a "hiccups pill", they take it and swallow it and hiccups miraculously disappear 😂
Like other methods it's to do with breathing. It's a cute one though.

WeeDangerousSpike · 14/12/2019 12:07

Sucking a slice of lemon really hard works too.

I wonder if concentrating on the letters being drawn distracts you and changes your breathing?

Tiredandgrumpytonight · 14/12/2019 12:08

@MostIneptThatEverStepped I take it there’s no actual pill? Or are you dishing out a paracetamol to everyone with hiccups? Grin

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/12/2019 12:09

Tea spoon of vinegar is my solution. With children the patting your head, sound circles on your tummy sorts it.

Iirc there was an article in new scientist a while ago that there's evidence sucking helps - so drinking through a straw (or getting a baby to suckle) May do the trick.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 14/12/2019 17:46

@Tiredandgrumpytonight
It's a pretend pill 😂

Allowing a spoonful of sugar to dissolve in your mouth is one that always works for me.

Wish I'd known this last night my daughter had hiccups that lasted for about an hour. The one thing I've tried that helps is drinking water out the opposite side of a glass (not sure how to explain what I mean) while someone covers your ears Confused. It does in fact work without the ear covering I guess due to concentrating on trying not to spill the water.

Praiseyou · 14/12/2019 18:16

9 sips of water never fails
