Direct debits have been returned to me.. what should I do ?

Sorry for the incredibly boring and mundane thread but it's not a situation I've ever been in before, therefore I've never really considered what I'm supposed to do now.

I purchased something online but due to a cock up they took payment three bloody times... infuriating however they arranged for the money to be back in my account today, and it has appeared. However the day after I made the purchase ( so yesterday) I had two direct debits coming out of my account. The cock up with money being taken three times left my account pretty close to £0 So both my direct debits were returned. Will the companies try take the direct debits again or do i need to make the payments myself. I don't want to make the payments and then have the direct debits come out at a later date, I can't afford to pay twice. I'm not entirely sure how I've spent so many years an adult without knowing what to do in this situation Confused
One of the direct debits was a credit card, my statement says in the event of a missed payment, the direct debit would reduce by any payments made during the monthly period? I make additional payments so will my direct debit be reduced to 0 in that case?

Can you get the bank to cancel it, and start again?

Does your bank charge for returning a direct debit ? Also the credit card will charge around £25 for a returned payment. Probably best to ring the bank and the companies involved to explain - the credit card company can waive the charge under the circumstances. Sorry this happened to you

Speak to the originators of the direct debits to ask when/if they will try for the payments again. Was a debit card transaction that was taken 3 times? Could you speak to the retailer as you may have incurred charges due to their error (returned dd charges probably)

You need to do several things.

First, contact the people you were paying by direct debit and tell them what happened. Their system may automatically try again, in which case all is well. Sometimes a returned d/d will cancel the whole thing from their end, so you may have to set up a new d/d and/or pay them the amount currently due.

Secondly, contact your bank and explain that what happened was not your fault and why, and that you do not expect them to charge you for the returned d/d's.

Thirdly, contact the people who made the mistake, and tell them that if your bank charges you, then you will expect them to reimburse you for the cost, because it was their fault the d/d's didn't go through.

The companies won't automatically take the direct debits again - you will almost certainly have to transfer the money yourself.

If the additional payments you've made on your credit card cover your minimum payment for the month, you won't get a late payment charge. Otherwise you'll most likely get a late payment charge from the credit card AND a returned direct debit charge from your bank.

Some credit card companies automatically permanently cancel a direct debit once it's been returned once, so you will need to speak to the credit card provider to reinstate the DD for next month.

This could all be expensive for you so definitely complain to the retailer who took your money three times.

You’ll need to contact the companies we tried to take the direct debits and explain what happened. They’ll tell you if you need to make the payments or if they’ll try to take them again.

*who not we

One of the companies have messaged me today to say they will try take the payment again on the 22nd, but that I should still make a payment as soon as possible, but if i make the payment will they still attempt it in the 22nd? Typically when I call I just get put straight on hold because all their lines are busy.

The payment I made to the credit card are way over the DD that's set up just to make sure I never miss the minimum payment. So I think that might be ok as it says there's nothing outstanding when I check my online banking.
All I need with all the stress of Christmas Sad
