Puppies and cat litter trays

Flower777 · 13/12/2019 21:20

Can I ask how it works if you get a puppy and also have a cat litter tray for your cat? Does the puppy learn ok that it has different rules and needs to go outside to the toilet?

And, if your cat was a contrary git who occasionally weed on the front door mat, would the puppy cope ok with that and not want to join in?!

Grateful for any advice or experience, thank you in advance!

I think you need to be more worried about your puppy seeing the litter tray as an all you can eat buffet Envy

Puppy’s will still eat it they are gross little things to start with 😂😂

Flower777 · 13/12/2019 21:31

Aieeeee!!

Yep, puppy will tuck in, roll in it, dig it up, drag it out of the tray...

You need a covered tray or put the tray in a cupboard with a cat flap or another room with a cat flap. Not many cats will use a litter tray in the same room as a puppy going bonkers.

Flower777 · 13/12/2019 22:13

No no this doesn't sound right. The puppy we are looking at looks like a little angel!? I can't believe they would do such foul things!

Then your in for a shock 😂

Booboostwo · 14/12/2019 05:36

No worries then, only the evil ones do this stuff! As long as it is light colored and long haired he will keep himself pristine! Xmas Grin

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 14/12/2019 07:06

Dogs are truly foul sometimes - mine has a penchant for rolling in corpses (the rat that was crawling with maggots was memorable, as was the dead cat). I've also found him nibbling at manure on someone's garden. And then he wants to lick my face Envy

Put the cat litter box off the ground, where DCat can get there but puppy can't!

aurynne · 14/12/2019 07:28

Your puppy will also eat the cat poo from the garden. Dogs, unfortunately, love cat poo.

hiredandsqueak · 14/12/2019 07:38

Yes dogs are foul and if they don't eat the cat poo they will probably roll in it as they love to roll in anything that stinks. The day ddog found a decaying pigeon corpse still haunts me. After rolling in it to avail himself of the scent and maggots he then picked up part of it (it was falling to pieces) to bring home. The bloody animal wouldn't drop it for all the treats in my pocket and I couldn't touch it to take it off of him so was in tears on the way home. Dh took it off him and I hosed him in the garden rather than the nice warm shower he usually gets.

RoombaSavedMySanity · 14/12/2019 07:47

I've just asked ddog if it's true all dogs like to eat cat poo. He just laughed.

This does not bode well. He has a cruel sense of humour Grin

The holy order of poo preferences goes something like this:

The holy grail for any dog is fox poo. You don’t just eat it, you roll in it, you wear it, you become the fox poo...as does everything else within a mile radius.

Cat poo comes a close second and is an easily available delicacy than can be dug up from any garden if you don’t have a self-serve buffet at home.

Horse and cow poo is a treat for any self respecting country dweller.

Other dog poo and one’s own poo for connoisseurs.

Rabbit and sheep poo will do when nothing else is available.

Duck poo is off list: it is wonderful but so tiny, it rarely satisfies anyone.

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 08:23

Does puppy identify as a cat?

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 08:28

If he identifies as a cat, you need to teach him about cat spaces. He's not a cat and he'll never be a cat. You're best placed teaching him that though he can wear a bell, he must never ever go near the cat's space. He's not a frigging cat.

Clear?

Good.

Because I can repeat this ad nauseum....... You're a DAWG dammit!

BarkandCheese · 14/12/2019 08:35

My dog is the cutest looking thing, but yeah, she loves to eat poo. Her crowning achievement was the day she scoffed so much goose poo on her walk she came home and promptly threw up stinking, green vomit all over the sofa.

Dogs are grim, but we still love them.

Flower777 · 14/12/2019 08:44

Whyyyyyyy do they eat poo?!?!? And rolling in corpses?!?

OP posts:
BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/12/2019 08:49

Because they’re delightful little creatures. Our litter tray is in the bathroom. Well away from the dog & the toddler.

Booboostwo · 14/12/2019 08:56

Oh yes vomited poo is one of the highlights of dog ownership.

They eat it because it presumably tastes good? I never though to test it! 🤣🤣🤣

APD1981 · 14/12/2019 08:57

Yes, he'll definitely try and eat anything in the tray, litter and all. We had a cocker spaniel a few years ago and we put the covered cat tray facing a tight corner with just enough room for the cat to get in it. I would scoop the poo as soon as poss but when I couldn't get to it in time the dog would spend ages manoeuvring the tray to get his head through the flap and eat the poo.

And don't get me started on leaving him in the garden to do his business and not getting out there quick enough to pick it up.

Dogs, in my opinion, are pretty gross animals!

adaline · 14/12/2019 09:00

Mine will eat cat poo (and vomit), throw it up and then try and eat it again 🤮🤮

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 09:03

My dog never ate shit?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/12/2019 09:04

oh yes, they LOVE the cat litter tray, it's the canine version of Ferrero Rocher for them. Even our GSDs who were the MOST honourable dogfaces ever were not above a taster from the CatPoo Buffet.

One of our pups who was slightly less vile than the rest of them had watched the cats use the litter tray ....cats do this to prove their superior status yeah they pick up your poo too, BUT you have to go out in the rain to do it....... and later that same day she scurried to the door then jumped into the tray and did a big puppy wee

I have pondered the viability of litter tray training puppies but since all ours are great giant galoots we carry on with the garden but if I ever get a froufrou pupper I am going to give it a go for sure

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 09:05

My father ( a farmer) would say it's a 'lacking' in them - basically his way of saying that from his experience they were lacking in vitamins/minerals.
