I need to get a roast dinner to the Canary Islands.

We're going to a small Canary island on Christmas Eve. 3 kids, 2 flights and we arrive late so can't do a supermarket shop.

We all want a proper Christmas dinner so I'll have to pack it all and take it with us won't I? We have full kitchen facilities there.

Only 2 of us eat meat so I won't need to take a huge bird or anything... I'm thinking maybe a ham would be better but will meat travel OK? Is it even allowed?

I'm going to feel mental packing sprouts aren't I? Any suggestions or experience doing this?

Small bit of specific help OP – this is a v good dried nutroast, you’ll get two good sized portions from one pack, it’s widely available and I usually add a couple of eggs and sometimes extra dried herbs or garlic puree or something to zuzhh it up a bit, but it’s quite tasty as it is.

Thank god they are supplying wine. I was fretting about that.

PortaRoast · 13/12/2019 16:58

@Starisnotanumber I have just asked the owners exactly that! Great idea.

@onalongsabbatical that nut roast is perfect! Cranberries make it a bit more festive. Thank you.

@AnchorDownDeepBreath where did you get that info from please? I'm keen to see something official to appease my worries. I've a friend who swears there were signs up at Tenerife airport that said all meet had to be declared Confused

Ive travel there often with meat and researched it a lot beforehand! It should be on the Gov site though, I'll try and dig it out.

Spitsandspots · 13/12/2019 17:27

pelirocco123 · 13/12/2019 17:36

You can not take meat into the country....tbh I think every country bans this

Starisnotanumber · 13/12/2019 18:00

Could you ask the villa owner to pick you up a chicken? All you would need then if they will get vegetables and cream is Christmas pudding and sprouts and your nut roast mix.
Happy holiday.

Starisnotanumber · 13/12/2019 18:22

Just a warning if you want to take Christmas crackers you can't they are classed as explosives and will be taken off you at the scanners.

userxx · 13/12/2019 22:22

@Spitsandspots Wtf is that 🤢

PaperbackBlighter · 13/12/2019 22:27

Wtf is that

Exactly what is says on the tin! Grin

BarbedBloom · 13/12/2019 22:44

I googled it. FCO regulations say no meat is allowed into Canary Islands.

Keeoe · 13/12/2019 23:40

@PaperbackBlighter that looks immense Grin One of these would complete the spread I feel OP. Looks delicious...

Davros · 13/12/2019 23:46

Those two tinned items are classic, revolting but classic 🤮

Keeoe · 14/12/2019 00:09

@Davros, pop me your address. I'll be round to cook you your Xmas dinner with them 😁 Mmmmmm. Gelatinous.

PestoPlatypus · 14/12/2019 00:36

You can take a sealed box of Christmas crackers but only in hold baggage and you must declare it at check-in.

katy1213 · 14/12/2019 00:53

You're mad. Google the local restaurants and e-mail to check if they're open. If not, the hotel restaurants surely will be.
Although I did read something today about Christmas dinner in a tin. You could buy one each?

katy1213 · 14/12/2019 00:55

Sorry, I see somebody else noticed it as well! It would make a Christmas to remember!

Warmfirechocolate · 14/12/2019 01:09

This is the most mumsnet thread I’ve ever read. Grin

Me and my family went to Lanzarote last Christmas. We took a frozen Turkey and frozen pigs in blankets in a cool bag inside our hold suitcase. I took a bag of sprouts some chanteny carrots, parsnips, gravy granules, stuffing and gravy mix. To finish it off a Xmas pud as well. We bought the potatoes over there and some cream for the pudding. We put the turkey in the oven on Christmas morning headed to the beach with a bottle of bubbly then returned back to the villa to finish cooking our Xmas dinner. We even bought fresh bread rolls boxing day and some pickles from the supermarket and had the rest of the turkey. It was lovely as we've been away for Xmas the last few years but the last one was the best eating our Xmas dinner in the sunshine sat around our private pool. We even bought a pop up Xmas tree to take and some blow up Xmas decorations to put in the pool and santa even left some pressies by the tree Christmas morning!!!

*Under EU regulations it is illegal to carry any meat, poultry or dairy into another country on a domestic flight.

From the FCO "According to E.U. conventions, you cannot take ay animal-based food products (including any form of meat or dairy) into Spain."

OP you may end up with a fine if you attempt this.

MiniGuinness · 14/12/2019 05:53

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou it is absolutely nothing like that at all. 😂 It just seems a lot of faff when there are probably far more exciting options available locally.

speakout · 14/12/2019 05:56

OP a quick google shows plenty resturants open in La Gomera on christmas day- and bookable online.

Dowser · 14/12/2019 07:01

Good lord..I’ve read it all now 😂
I’m here now..not on la gomera..it’s big sister opposite
It’s Enough Faff and stress just to get here myself and dh with luggage etc..never mind bringing all the Christmas stuff with you.
Good luck to you though.
Bringing going along a frozen turkey would be my worst nightmare...someone might expect me to cook it.

Never been to la go era..I’ve never fancied all those twisty, turny mountainous roads..I had enough the time we went to ,as a.
I’ve always wondered what it’s like though
You see it in the mist from the beach at Tenerife...like Bali high.

Bendybop · 14/12/2019 07:11

Christ what a PITA 😂

speakout · 14/12/2019 07:24

Surely part of fun of going abroad for christmas is that things are different??

Otherwise why go?
