Car insurance question!

NotOnMyWatchSunshine · 13/12/2019 12:12

Hi! Does anyone know if it is legal to drive a car that doesn't have its own specific insurance but I am insured to drive cars? Does that even make sense...? Confused I am a named driver on my Dads car insurance but I need to pick up and use my old car that has been in a garage for nine months getting fixed and the insurance I had on it is expired, it's a stupid Range Rover so the insurance is huge and I'm selling it within two weeks of getting it back so don't want to fork out a huge amount for insurance.

If that makes any sense and you can offer any help well done thanks!

It is unlikely that the insurance you have as a named driver on your dad's policy is transferrable to any other vehicle. -- you need to know of you have 3rd party cover for any other vehicle driven with the owners permission. And if you own the other vehicle again it would be unlikely, even if you did have a policy letting you drive other cars, that you can use it for your own vehicle. (That's to stop people getting a policy for a cheaper car and using it to drive a more expensive car ) You could call the insurance company and ask for temporary cover.

You need to ask the insurance company who provide the policy that you're named on, to see if a named driver is covered for another vehicle.
My guess is that you won't be covered as you're a named driver and not the policyholder.
And I'd also guess that your dad, as the policyholder, would probably only be covered for 3rd party, fire and theft anyway.
However, I'm guessing - only the insurance company can tell you for sure

No you won't be able to. It's your Dad's policy and you are named on it. You do not have insurance in your own name.

No it's not legal. Driving other cars cover is for driving an already insured car with the permission of the owner. You being a named driver on your dads policy is unlikely to cover you to drive other cars anyway.
You can either get temporary insurance or find a company that don't charge huge fees to cancel a policy. You also need to tax the car if it isn't already (which needs valid insurance)

Thanks all! I did assume that was the case I just thought I'd check. I'll get some temporary cover sorted before I pick it up. Love good old Mumsnet and it's immediate (daft) question answering.

Insurance is a minefield! You are a named driver, this means you don't hold the policy to transfer! If the policy holder added your range rover to the policy (can get 24hrs cover) and insured you also, then yes you can! Or, take out a 24hrs cover yourself! Car must be taxed and moted!
