Please help.

We're moving in on Saturday, front room is hideous.
Decor and curtains (carpets are going in tomorrow).
DS3's first birthday is the following weekend and family are down to see him and the new home.

Inspiration for decor aside Pinterest (its all grey or cream?!) and curtains.

Apart from Dunelm where do we get curtains?!

Surely the easiest option is to point out you moved in 20 minutes ago, then sort out decor after Christmas when you know what you actually want?

Singlenotsingle · 12/12/2019 20:48

Generally if you're in a hurry the best idea is just plain white. (Boring, I know). Then you can add cushions/curtains/pictures and redecorate at a later date when you've had time to think. Otherwise you risk making a big, expensive mistake.
Curtains? Any department store, or eBay if you had more time.

If you're after more interesting ideas try the house talk Facebook group. Lots of ideas for colours etc.

What colour is the carpet?

Goldwispa · 12/12/2019 21:16

All sounds a bit stressful to me so close to Christmas. People won't care what it looks like as you've just moved in.

brassbrass · 12/12/2019 21:16

Don't rush it. Just go white until you've had time to really pull it all together.

Howmanysleepsnow · 13/12/2019 07:36

Do you have a painting/ rug/ cushion you love? If so choose a colour from that (possibly in a lighter shade) for the walls, and a second (and third if you want) for accents. It gives a good starting point, pulls everything together and you know the colours will work.

Howmanysleepsnow · 13/12/2019 07:42

Oh, and The Range do curtains.

RhymingRabbit3 · 13/12/2019 07:46

I would just leave it as it is and then do a good job of it when you have the time - otherwise it's just a waste of money! I'm sure your guests would understand.

Pascha · 13/12/2019 07:56

Hideous as in:
You don't like it and it needs a refresh.
Or
Ripped wallpaper, mould, broken fixtures.

The extent of the awfulness (pic?) determines the response.

The first, you

Pascha · 13/12/2019 07:57

Ignore last line...

JoyceJames · 13/12/2019 08:17

I'd do white, unless the room is north or east facing, in which case I'd do a slightly warm shade of white.

Atalune · 13/12/2019 08:19

A photograph would help!

All White by Farrow and ball Is a lovely rich chalky white.

What are your sofas like? What colour are your curtains and carpet.

We need more information! Grin

Atalune · 13/12/2019 08:22

Ikea for.....everything!
Curtains, cushions, rugs, throws.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/12/2019 11:39

White it is then! Thanks for the tip.

Dulux Jasmine white has a very slight hint of cream so good all rounder. You can always do a feature coloured wall afterwards. Would recommend Valspar paint for this as good strong colours. Neutral curtains. Agree about a rug and picking out colours from this for cushions. Great websites online. Create a focal point using a large picture or fireplace which should draw the eye away from things you don't like. If you are having a tree put that up too.

Good luck in your new home!

LochJessMonster · 13/12/2019 14:22

B&M for cheap but nice decor

Vicki411 · 13/12/2019 14:23

BandQ are a great source for cheap and cheerful curtains, area rugs etc

melovechocolate · 13/12/2019 23:41

Why the rush? Relax, get Christmas over with then plan it out properly in the new year otherwise you'll just end up wasting money. No one would expect you to have it decorated the moment you move in.

melovechocolate · 13/12/2019 23:43

Also you said pinterest is all grey and cream, but honestly how is painting it all white any less boring?

brassbrass · 14/12/2019 11:17

You're missing the point melovechocolate. The white is a temporary fix but one that won't be totally wasted effort because it will be an ok base for whatever colour OP goes with once she's had time to design it properly.

fiorentina · 14/12/2019 11:34

Agree that if you want to paint, go all white as a good base. Xmas decorations hide a multitude of awfulness too. Everyone knows you’ve just moved in. They won’t expect it to be decorated. Just have a good clean and you will hopefully feel better? The great thing about awful decor is that you won’t care if anything gets damaged with people around?!

AlwaysThereForEveryoneElse · 14/12/2019 11:53

You sound like me op.
I can't wait if I don't like something it makes me genuinely very unhappy.
We've just moved to a rental. The girls. Room was horrid. Ds room. Needed a freshen ( others do too but livable)
We got keys 7 days before moving. In that 7 days I was there paint stripping. Re paining. Carpets fitted. ( all had permission From LL who even offered to re imburse the price for it all)
I juts couldn't settle if I'd not.
A week after moving I had kitchen tiled as old ones were manky and dated. I mean filthy beyond cleaning.
And LL offered a new kitchen in new year.

I got all new curtains from. Dunelm. Except lounge which can wait till new Yr as the ones here are actually fine just too thin.
And put new ligh shades etc up so made a huge difference

Range curtains wernt good quality compared to dunelm.

AlwaysThereForEveryoneElse · 14/12/2019 11:55

Alrho I'm now thinking of painin our room now before Xmas when dh works nights. As I hate evenings. But 34w pregnant and a toddler going thro a bad. Sleep regression so may not be a good Idea lol

longtompot · 14/12/2019 12:11

Clean everything and just paint the walls white. Matt paint, so any defects aren't as obvious.

But honestly, they know you will have just moved in. Don't stress about it. Enjoy your new home, and take time to make it your own.
