Feeling anxious about the election result

Just that really. I am terrified of a Jeremy Corbyn government. A Home Secretary who can’t even match her shoes is the least of my concerns. But if he spends all this money it won’t be us or our children paying the bill but our grandchildren. How can people be so naive regarding all the free stuff.

Are we going to have to go through this again in 12 months??

Boris is disgusting but he isn’t planning on spending a trillion pound of taxpayers money.

How much do you think Boris is going to spend on Brexit?

whiteroseredrose · 12/12/2019 20:53

I would fear for DH's job if Labour got in.

His company could just as easily be headquartered in Ireland and if corporation tax got too high and employees rights were in place from day one rather than after a probation period then the UK would be an unattractive place to be.

Two companies that I've worked for in the past have closed down huge sites so I know it can be done.

And I don't want to live in Ireland!

Surreynewbie · 12/12/2019 20:55

But surely if we borrow (at an incredibly low rate) money to build schools and hospitals we could give more jobs. If we give more jobs we create more tax payers. If we create more tax payers we pay off the borrowing and have extra to spend on education, the elderly, police officers etc etc
Making a profit on borrowing is how tons of huge businesses work - in theory it isn’t a bad thing

I am terrified of another Boris Johnson government. No integrity whatsoever and a complete disregard for the rule of law.

Have seen some hints today that his own constituency is looking particularly tight, so here’s hoping he comes a cropper 🤞

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/12/2019 21:04

What is it with this weird sound bite “our children and grandchildren will be paying for it all” that Tory voters are so attached to? I’m not a Labour voter and not particularly enamoured with Corbyn, but it’s a statement which makes no sense at all. Why is it worse for (fictional and theoretical, particularly since I don’t have or want children) future generations, some of whom don’t exist yet to suffer than for existing ones to suffer now?

LemonPrism · 12/12/2019 21:25

Ffs you'll be fine, we always are. And if the worst thing he does is over promise then I'd rather that than a sexist, racist elitist.

LemonPrism · 12/12/2019 21:29

Plus, I'm 24. I will be paying for it. And I would rather pay than like in austerity like I have for my entire voting life.

Mishappening · 12/12/2019 21:31

Both Labour and Tory are promising a big spend on public services; Labour because it has always been their policy to support public services, and Cons because they know that their 10 years of underfunding has made them less electable.

There are sound economic theories that support spending as a good route to go; so I am not afraid of that. It is important to remember that national budgets cannot be compared to domestic budgets (in spite of Thatcher's assertions) But I am afraid that people in this country might be happy to vote in a known liar and a cheat `- that makes me very anxious indeed.

I do not think either party is likely to get an overall majority; and my tactical vote is based on a desire to make sure that if BJ gets in, his wings will be clipped.

Election2019 · 12/12/2019 21:35

I’m worried no matter who gets in!

Realistically, how many job do you think building a few new schools and hospital will create? You're also failing to factor in all of the businesses that will leave the UK under a Labour government. Once corporation tax rises, job losses will follow closely behind.

Horehound · 12/12/2019 21:38

Haven't the Tories been increasing our debt?

happinessischocolate · 12/12/2019 21:46

A Home Secretary who can’t even match her shoes is the least of my concern

The fact that you got taken in by a photoshopped photo does not surprise me at all.

Perhaps you should consider all the other anti labour lies you've swallowed.

Surreynewbie · 12/12/2019 21:48

@Lily193
The ‘London’ and ‘UK’ label will still carry huge prestige internationally. Do you have any references to credible research to support your claim that all these businesses will be leaving? In all honesty I’ve always dismissed that argument as scaremongering so I’d be very interested to read any credible research on this.

A small primary school has a budget of about 1.5 million, 80% of that budget will usually be spent on staffing. Primary schools might employ 60-80 people when you count everyone (dinner supervisors, TAs, sports coaches, full time teachers, part time teachers etc etc) secondary schools can be five times larger and hospitals ten times.

Foslady · 12/12/2019 22:32

Happy now you’ve got the exit poll you want.
Hope you don’t rely on the NHS

As a company director, I would say I'm well placed to comment on the likely trend in my industry.

motorcyclenumptiness · 12/12/2019 22:38

Haven't the Tories been increasing our debt?
There was a time in the not too distant past when all the tories could talk about was the deficit and the desperate need to reduce it. And then they started increasing it.
