feeling defeated over nits!

for a few weeks I have been checking dds head and found nothing. Until yesterday. I have been itching for 2 days. I used 8 hour hedrin on DD overnight and still found a few live ones today with the comb. Due to her scratching she has some open areasso cannotuse the 15 min spray hedrin on her. I did use that on myself. again found a few live ones.

I haven't actually washed the stuff out her head yet. do you think it wold be ok to double dose her and use more hedrin then wash it out later?

I feel totally defeated over this. Between that and Christmas looming with money issues I don't know where to start and feel I'm slipping into a mild depression. Can't keep up with the house and want to sleep a lot.

Honestly they are a fucking nightmare. BUT with the xmas hols coming up (assuming she's at school) you have a chance to get rid of them.

The only way I've managed to do it is the conditioner and nitty gritty comb method every three days for a couple of weeks. I know it is a pain in the arse but the current strand seem indestructible otherwise. Then the hedrin nit repellant seems to actually work for my kids.

Godspeed in the battle ahead.

We spent most of primary school combing my daughter's hair with a leave-in tea tree conditioner at least once a week. I look back on the time together to chat fondly but it was bloody awful at the time.

It sounds like maybe the money issues etc is clouding the way you feel about other things?

Nits are a really common problem and not that difficult to deal with. I have two girls who go to a school crawling with nits, and am in the habit of combing every Sunday night. As soon as one is found I do the headrin treatment and up the combing to every day or every other day.

For school keep hair in a french pleat, or at the very least up in a high ponytail, and I use some hairspray because in my head it forms a sort of barrier against them.

You can also use straighteners to kill them (obviously not too much on kids hair).

Tea tree oil is a natural repellent, you can dilute it and spray it on every morning (Vosene does a shampoo and spray but if money is tight just make your own).

Honestly it happens. Try not to feel defeated by it. Nits are not a battle lol, they're a constant war and as long as you're doing something your doing more than some parents are 😊

Nits are a fucking nightmare. About 4 years ago my daughter had them so bad I just couldn't get rid of them.

I basically nuked my daughters head with an entire bottle of Hedrin once (she does have super long, super thick hair to be fair). The bottle said it was good for 6 applications. I put the whole lot on her head. Rinsed it, combed it, sprayed her hair with tea tree oil and braided it.

Two days later, I did the same thing.

Her hair is now constantly braided and I spray it with tea tree oil daily and I haven't seen any since.

You don’t have to keep repurchasing Hedrin, just get the cheapest conditioner you can find and smother the hair in it. Then comb thoroughly. I tend to section my DD’s hair into four bunches, then work my way around her head, left temple to right temple, say. You have to cover every single square centimetre of scalp. It’s SO boring but you’ll crack it that way.

Bluntness100 · 12/12/2019 16:24

It is an absolute nightmare. Honestly you need the heavy duty stuff

My daughter has an avalanche of long curly hair, and fuck me I lost count of the weekends we spent de lousing her, I would get her clear and then two weeks later she'd have them again, because some twat parent didn't do it properly and used some gentle shite on their kid, or didn't bother, and sent them back to school to reinfect everyone. Used to make me furious.

LilQueenie · 12/12/2019 16:25

Thank you. I'll try the repellent spray. Is it bad that I kept her off school today to soak her hair again? I feel like I'm in full on battle mode against the little buggers.

We also have the tea tree shampoo for washing with now too plus new brushes. bye bye Christmas money. Sad

What @Haworthia said-every evening for a week and you’ll get it sorted. There is NO quick fix whatever the bottles say

Iloveacurry · 12/12/2019 16:30

You’re not alone. The last school year was a nightmare for nits in our house! I have two girls with long hair and I can’t tell tell you how many times they both had them! I lost count to be honest. I used a Nitty Gritty comb with loads of cheap conditioner. It seemed to do the trick. Touch wood, so far this year we haven’t had nits. Might of helped that my eldest went to secondary school in September.

LilQueenie · 12/12/2019 16:33

DD is 8 and this is the first time we have had this. I'm sure that makes us lucky that it took this long. I'm thankful for that. I'll try the straightners on us both too. thanks for the tip.
