Should I give up on this job?

Had a job interview on Monday for a part time teaching position . After the interview the head teacher told me I’d hopefully hear that afternoon .

I haven’t heard a thing yet, no emails or voicemails etc . I’ve checked the website I applied via (standard for our LA) and there’s nothing on there either, just says its in progress.

Family are all saying to phone and ask but I’m wary of seeming pushy especially it’s just a part time job, I’m sure they don’t need me pestering them in a school at this time of year!

Should I phone and ask, or just wait and keep applying for others in the meantime?

Just phone.

Waterandlemonjuice · 12/12/2019 12:41

Keep applying, it doesn’t sound good.

custardbear · 12/12/2019 12:47

Yes I'd phone

At this time of year schools are ridiculously busy! Don’t give up, give them a ring.

Queenfreak · 12/12/2019 12:56

Call them.

FreedomBird · 12/12/2019 14:31

Call them. This has happened to me before where they have had my details down incorrectly

tajobquery · 12/12/2019 14:55

I’ve rung several times and the phone just rings out , no other number for the school but will keep trying ! Hopefully it is just a case of the wrong details or they’re very busy or something !

Is the school being used as a polling station ? It could be closed today

stormy11 · 12/12/2019 15:46

Definitely ring - it shows your really interested. It helped me a few years ago when applying at a Dentists. Don't give up Smile

tajobquery · 12/12/2019 16:45

Dry I never even considered that but yes, they are being used as a polling station! Will try ring tomorrow . Didn’t consider that - local school is still open as we use the public hall, but a lot of the schools in town are shut. That’s put my mind at rest a wee bit at least ! Thanks 😊

You are welcome
Fingers crossed for you

Sister has just rung saying a friend of hers got told she had the job yesterday . They said they had three vacancies but I’m sure they would have told me yesterday if I had it . Gutted as there’s no other jobs here that don’t involve bloody driving (I can’t drive) and I’m in stupid situation of not being entitled to benefits (in sick leave from uni) . God knows what to do now but suppose at least I’ve got a better idea now .

The one thing is that is concerning me a lot is during the interview, the HT said, ‘You have said you have a disability covered under the equality act, what’s your disability and what would we have to do for you?’

I don’t think she should have asked that; she went on to write down my answer (dyspraxia) on the job application and I have a horrible feeling that if I haven’t got the job then that’s why - I don’t think that’s allowed.

To be fair, she was just addressing what may be difficult for you
What should she have said, or would you prefer she ignored it?

tajobquery · 12/12/2019 21:49

I would have thought they’d normally ignore it and discuss if hired ? I’m worried that she’s thinking if I have dyspraxia, they’ll need to make adjustments and so better off hiring someone who doesn’t need that iyswim . Which is fair enough I guess but I’d rather be judged on what I can do - not what I can’t ... that and the form said all that sort of information is treated confidentially and not shared with the hiring committee .. which clearly wasn’t the case.

I’ve had a drink now so probably getting myself a bit het up over nothing to be honest !!

If you declared your disability on the application form then surely it's reasonable for them to ask about what reasonable adjustments you might need. It gives a candidate a chance to explain in person (rather than on a phone call or on an application form) how their disability affects them, and any questions/concerns they may have about a role? I have a disability but don't tend to declare it. If I had declared it, I would expect to be asked about it in a non-judgmental way. It shouldn't affect the outcome of the interview though, and it doesn't sound like they gave you any indication it would?

tajobquery · 13/12/2019 17:57

I’m not sure , probably is quite legit but just caught me off guard. Previous interviews I’ve never been asked about it during interview , but have had to have occupational health clearance instead (once hired) .

It was on the same section that asks if you’re gay, trans, religious, BME, etc etc , I always thought that was treated separately but I can see that they’d tell them I had a disability in case that needed adjustments for the interview stage I imagine.

It probably is the correct procedure though yes, and it’s just sheer bad luck that i discovered via Facebook that I didn’t get the job!

As it happens they emailed this afternoon - after I phoned - to say I don’t have the job . Bit gutted but what can you do .

Just have to keep searching !!

Thank you anyway Flowers
