I have a question about claiming house insurance.

I've never claimed before. Don't need to but recently renewed so pondering.

In the case of burglary/ fire do you need receipts of things?

We live in a very high risk crime area and most of my furniture is 2nd hand.

I'd say out of the whole house I would only be able to provide email receipts for maybe my fridge freezer, washer and dryer.

Everything else is 2nd hand or I don't have receipts.

What would happen in the event of a claim?

I didn't when I claimed. They know how much stuff costs and that everyone owns a fridge, freezer etc.

Mine was a claim for damages and i ended up saying things like 'I had 15 cookery books costing about £x' and they were happy.

I've only ever claimed for a carpet, they didn't ask for proof of how much it had originally cost, just a quote for a new one. It may depend on the polivy and if you have 'new for old' in there.

I wouldn't have thought so. Surely if your house burnt down, the receipts would have been inside anyway and burnt to ash too?

No you dont have to have receipts for everything (nobody does). Usually they ask you to estimate the total value of your items when you apply for the insurance, and this affects your premiums. If you then tried to claim masses more than the estimate they would probably question it.
