Why do public sector workers vote Tory?

Yes another thread questioning why people vote a certain way. I work in the public sector & have been affected by the cuts over the past 9 years. I've seen so many services vanish overnight, I've seen the impact of such cuts as well as benefits reduction policies have had on the vulnerable. Personally I had a pay freeze for 8 years & feel my career has stalled partly due to lack of opportunities now due to the shrunken public sector.
So for me voting for the Tories would be like a turkey voting for Christmas, but I know some people in the PS will vote Tory. Why?

In this instance because Labour are not only going to bring in self ID within the Gender Recognition Act, but also remove women's sex based protections by mucking about with the Equality Act 2010.

Well, enlighten us, Snowman.

orangeteal · 12/12/2019 09:16

@Mintjulia so why are they supporting Brexit. I very much doubt anyone other than their own self preservation is motivating them. If they gave a fuck about the next generation they wouldn't be supporting Brexit or the Tories.

Emmapeeler1 · 12/12/2019 09:22

Most colleagues I work with are left-leaning, in an environment of service cuts which we are left to take the blame for (the Tory MPs who implemented those cuts forward us the complaints to respond to). They mostly also think Labour has lost its way but this does not make a Boris Johnson government for five years any more attractive a prospect.

The colleagues I have who I suspect to be Tory voters are nearing retirement. The older, now retired colleagues I previously worked with were generally lefties.

GOODCAT · 12/12/2019 09:24

I will vote conservative because the other parties want to spend far more than we have and will create huge debt that we will not pay off for many generations. We have to have the strongest economy possible to fund the public sector.

SilverySurfer · 12/12/2019 09:28

Maybe because they don't want the economy fucked up for years to come which would happen if Labour won.

dameofdilemma · 12/12/2019 09:35

Because ignorance, paranoia and being ill informed isn’t solely the privilege of private sector workers.

People know the entire cast of I’m a celebrity but base their political knowledge on Facebook. Doesn’t matter which sector they work in.

Take a look at some of the countries around the world that do not have adequate education, health, welfare for all (but have gold plated services for the wealthy).
Take a look at the human rights abuses, high crime rates (or authoritarian regimes).
Bet they’re proud of their low spend on public services.

hettysdrawers · 12/12/2019 09:35

I certainly don't and neither does my private sector working DP for precisely the reasons you state! Some people who don't work in public services really don't see the shrinkage of support for not just the vulnerable but even one time support services that do so much good and prevent further more costly problems. 12 years ago our local authority had a thriving youth service, now all we have left are a small series of statutory services mopping up those in dire need. There is no early intervention anymore and it's incredibly sad to see.
I don't know if Labour can or will improve things but I know for certain that a Conservative government is very unlikely to be fixing issues they've created/perpetuated.

Labour brought in teaching assistants and police community support officers as a way of holding down wages for teachers and police officers.

Twinklelikethechristmastree · 12/12/2019 10:19

It keeps them in a job.?

Letseatgrandma · 12/12/2019 10:38

It keeps them in a job.?

Can you explain this?

I’m a teacher. If Labour win tonight-what are you presuming will happen to my job?!

Pinkpanther473 · 12/12/2019 10:51

My worries about Labour recently:
Don’t trust Corbyn and don’t like the way he has led his party to be one that is hostile to women and people of Jewish faith
Very concerned about interview he did yesterday with Pink News
The change in policy he is proposing re self ID will have direct and negative consequences for vulnerable people I work with
Very concerned about his ability to negotiate on our behalf with other countries
Still unclear what his position is re Brexit
Therefore completely unclear about how he can pump more money into welfare etc
At least with other Labour leaders they seemed compassionate but also savvy about generating income and negotiating with other leaders in the world
Not saying any of the other parties are any more attractive but this is why I’m wary of voting Labour

SpoonBlender · 12/12/2019 11:12

@SilverySurfer Real actual economists have looked into Labour's manifesto pledge costing, and even in the worst case it'll cost far, far less than Brexit will. Check the IFS report, or pick your own amongst several others.

Plus it's all largely reversible in five years if need be, unlike Brexit where if we drop out of the EU we'll never be able to have the same influence again even if we later rejoin.

Pinkpanther473 · 12/12/2019 11:20

@spoonblender I personally think that ship has sailed in terms of credibility with EU even if we tried to reverse it now. I voted remain but I don’t see any way back now without really compromising our position with EU.
Plus I also don’t trust this is really Corbyn’s stance, he was awfully quiet about brexit for the last two years. At least with Lib Dem’s you know this is something they believe in and are signed up to.
Jeremy Corbyn to me just seems to be all about domestic reforms. Which is fine but we’re also in the middle of a muddle around brexit which is harming our economy.

"Public sector workers" is a hugely varied group of people, from your local bin collection crew to teachers to admin staff to upper management in council departments and the NHS... and obviously all from different backgrounds with different values and beliefs, outside of their work in the public sector.
