Crack in windscreen - help!

I so need my car tomorrow for a journey on the motorway, and I've just spotted a crack. It's not worth risking it, is it? Sad Sad

Have driven for years and never had one before. Is Autoglass my best option or do garages do them? Agh!!

Check your insurance you can usually get it all sorted through that. There is normally a number to ring for windscreen problems on the insurance document

It depends how big the crack is. My car had a crack and I used it for several days before auto glass replaced it.

I've been driving for weeks with a crack. Its not in my line of vision though.

Insurance usually do for you, you will need to pay excess, but they will come out to you (home or work) and doesn't usually affect your no claims. When they've come to me it has always been the same day.

Depends what crack means. Garages can fix these up to a certain size and depending on location.

Yeah check your insurance, usually you have cover through that. I drove with a crack for a few days, it's not going to instantly shatter dont worry.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 12/12/2019 08:30

Don't drive a long distance with a crack.

LIZS · 12/12/2019 08:31

Where on the windscreen is it? Not all cracks spread and it is legal to drive if not in field of vision. However autoglass etc sometimes take days to come out.

goingtotown · 12/12/2019 09:39

Don’t risk it OP

FixTheBone · 12/12/2019 09:41

Autoglass ways had a diagram on their website explaining what is fixable, what needs replacing and what's legal to drive with.

Notverygrownup · 13/12/2019 12:38

Thank you. Sorry I disappeared. Didn't drive with it, managed to get a lift to the station - will get it fixed via insurance now.

I had a cracked windscreen earlier this year (hit by a flying stone as I was driving down a major dual carriageway).

I was a bit worried about it as I was a long way from home. I was assured by the people who eventually replaced it that there was absolutely no way it would break. At some point they changed the type of glass used in windscreens to make it safer (my car is 2005, so it's not a recent development).

I drove the car about 300 miles to get it home (mainly on motorways) before it was mended and it was absolutely fine.
