Straw poll: Are you voting tactically?

To explain what I mean by "tactical voting": imagine that you were the only voter in your constituency and therefore whichever candidate you voted for would become your MP. Which candidate would you vote for? Then think about which candidate you actually plan to vote for in real life. Are the two the same? If not, you are clearly voting tactically. It seems to me there are the following possible scenarios:

A. Yes, I'm voting tactically.

B. No, I don't need to vote tactically because the candidate I like best (a) does stand a decent chance of winning, or (b) is the candidate with the best chance of beating the person I really don't want as my MP.

C. No, I'm not voting tactically. The candidate I'm voting for stands no chance of winning, but I live in such a safe seat for one party that I might as well vote with my heart.

D. No, I'm not voting tactically. Even though it's not obvious who will win in my constituency, I am voting for a candidate who has no hope of winning. I'm doing that because as a matter of principle I want to support my preferred candidate/don't feel able to support any of the candidates who do stand a chance.

Think I've thought of all scenarios (assuming you are actually voting)! Which one are you? (I'm B.)

I need an honest candidate who will have a chance to represent me at Westminster HeronLanyon. I've had enough of the lies and the bullshit. I only hope that they hate Tory policy more than they hate Europe.

I have to match my vote to my beliefs, if everyone else did the same our government might even become respond and competent- imagine that!!

First time ever I've not voted with my heart but I'm in an extremely marginal constituency and this is the only way my vote might make a difference that I can live with (just about!).

Interesting to read the "anything but Tory". Where I live it's "anything but the SNP"...

A matches best.
I'm in a marginal, but I actually don't mind whether my first choice gets in (sitting MP), or the party most likely to beat them, as they are both pro-EU.

I'm voting for the future of the country. Which I think is best served by remaining in the EU.

I am sort of. It's A and C.

My constituency is a safe seat for a party I don't wish to win. The candidate I would prefer to vote for would be a definite C scenario. But I feel like there is perhaps a tiny chance that we might be able to prevent the 'dominant' party in this seat winning if enough people vote for the 2nd place party. So I plan to vote for 2nd place instead of my preferred 3rd place.

This will probably be in vain as I don't think that my constituency has EVER been anything other than the current party. But it's got to be worth a try.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 11/12/2019 22:49

C as it's a ridiculously safe seat unfortunately. I have previously voted tactically and even vote swapped in local elections.

soupforbrains · 11/12/2019 22:50

@WarmSausageTea do we live in the same constituency?!

B because our MP is awesome and deserves to retain her seat.
Our area has always been a labour stronghold but our area also voted 'leave' in the referendum so there is a lot of hatred towards her for not 'carrying out the wishes of her constituents' because she didn't support Teresa or Boris's 'deal'
I just hope enough of us can get her back where she belongs.

norkins · 11/12/2019 23:01

I'm voting tactically. Marginal seat here
Anyone but Tory scumbags

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 11/12/2019 23:01

A. And vote swapped with somebody in Winchester. I'm in a key NW marginal, so am voting for my country not my party.

pinkmoomin · 11/12/2019 23:03

A - I’m a Labour supporter but I’d love to see Rabb get the boot tomorrow. It’s looking like the Lib Dem’s are in with a chance 🤞

HeronLanyon · 11/12/2019 23:07

pink here’s hoping. Standard headline an hour ago - ‘Tory lead shrinks to 5% result too close to call’. Blimey is there no end to the drama ! Come on !!

not really any of those, I vote for the candidate/party I agree with the most. That's it.
