I am going to try my first Cola Ham but have some questions.....

Slow cooker or oven?

Full fat or diet coke?

To glaze and how, what with?

I know it's really popular so putting it to the experts.

Personally i do it in the cola on the stove. Then cut off the rind and score the fat . I then mix honey and mustard(i used the powder) and pour all over ham turning so it is well covered . I then roast in the oven till the fat is a nice colour . hth

hisnameisfreckles · 11/12/2019 20:20

Oh and i always use full fat

Itsashame · 11/12/2019 20:21

Has to be full fat coke

I use Nigellas recipe - it’s bloody lovely -which iirc is pretty much what hisname just posted

Itsashame · 11/12/2019 20:22

As it’s the sugar that does the magic

NewHome2020 · 11/12/2019 20:22

I'm going to try cola ham in the slow cooker this year too - is it really just a can of coke over the ham and then turn on slow cooker?

NewHome2020 · 11/12/2019 20:24

Apologies - just googled it and realised it's a bit more complicated than that Blush

Cheeseboardcriminal · 11/12/2019 20:27

Ah they always go on about diet coke ham in slimming world but yea I can understand the sugar is quite important.

I boil in cola or apple juice/ cider then roast.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/12/2019 20:29

I use cherry coke, and then take it out, apply a crust of dark sugar/spices, and then roast. Lovely.

AlwaysCheddar · 11/12/2019 20:31

Dr Pepper is good too.... on the stove.

Pinkshoelace · 11/12/2019 20:47

It's amazing. You do need the proper stuff and it's more like a bottle then a can.

I've only ever done it on the stove, then a quick blast in the oven.

theemmadilemma · 11/12/2019 20:52

Delia's recipe every time. It's divine.

Chinainmyhand · 11/12/2019 20:57

Nom nom, I shall try this next week.

MsSquiz · 11/12/2019 20:58

I do mine in a casserole pot on the hob.

Gammon joint in full sugar coke (enough to cover the meat), cinnamon sticks and star anise. I have the job on low (4 on the induction) for around 4 hours.

After 4 hours, I take it out and shred it like pulled pork. I then put it in a roasting dish and cover it with a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon & maple syrup.
Leave it to work it's way through the meat, then give it a good mix before covering with foil and putting it in the oven to warm through. Take off the foil for 10 mins and turn the oven up high to get the crispy ham edges.

We usually have it in soft bread buns or with roast potatoes

poseysbobblehat · 11/12/2019 20:59

I do it on low in the slow cooker, cut off fat as it just goes like jelly, and always full sugar coke. Ginger beer ham is good too

Cheeseboardcriminal · 11/12/2019 21:26

Some fab tips thanks! Looked up Delias recipe, ate the cloves essential? I hate anything like that.

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 11/12/2019 21:34

I always skip the cloves. I tend to use a cinnamon/paprika/ginger/muscovado sugar mix for the crust.

GoodCheer · 11/12/2019 21:38

I do a version of Nigella’s and it’s amazing.

On the Hob in full fat coke, with a clove studded onion.

When it’s done, let it cool a bit, slice off rind with a sharp knife, pat in a mixture of dark brown sugar and mustard powder (messy!), stud with cloves. Hung in oven until it’s all bubbling and juicy.
