Anyone had a tubal ligation done during a cesarean?

Just wondering what were your experiences? I'm currently expecting dc4 and definitely do not want any more kids. DH and I have both agreed from the beginning of this pregnancy that if I had a cs, I would have a tubal ligation, but if I have a regular labour, he will get a vasectomy. It's looking likely now that I will have a cs, and I've geared myself up for the tl and am happy enough with the finality of it.

However, at my last consultant appointment, I was told that instead of removing a piece of the tubes, they now remove the whole thing, and this sometimes causes heavy periods afterwards. She said many women go on to have Mirenas fitted to counteract this bleeding.

I'm a bit Hmm about this because the whole point of getting the tl was that I'd be able to avoid the mirena (and any other form of hormonal contraception) and am now wobbling a bit.

I did but it was 28 years ago so not sure of new procedures. I had Elected CS under general anaesthetic and the operation was completed after DC2 was born.

I did last march, all uneventful. my periods are slightly heavier but only last 2 days and not heavy enough that it causes problems for me. recovery was slightly longer than I expected afterwards but so glad I got it done

SqueekyNuts · 13/12/2019 16:47

I didn't have it under CS as I opted for it as I never wanted children.

The consultant said that they prefer to remove most of the tubes rather than clipping as new research suggests ovarian cancer in later life often originates from the tubes so removing them reduces that risk. I did have the choice of clipping or removing and I chose removing them.

Made no difference to my periods but I did stop the OCP just before and they are much lighter now.

I did when I had fifth dc ten yrs ago. No issues at all and healed the same as my other sections

elmosducks · 13/12/2019 17:40

I did 4 years ago, with DC4. I had horrendous periods for 2 years, but then had an ablation which has worked brilliantly so far.

hedgehoglurker · 13/12/2019 18:43

I did, but my tubes were clipped rather than removed during second c section 9 years ago - third baby/pregnancy. I had no real issues apart from slightly worse pain than c section alone. I then underwent a total hysterectomy 3 years later due to my unrelated cervical cancer risk, so can't comment on long term.

hedgehoglurker · 13/12/2019 18:46

Forgot to add, periods were a little heavier. However, prior to procedure I had mostly been on hormonal contraceptives, but went au natural after tubal ligation, so this and advancing age could account for it.

Brahms3rdracket · 13/12/2019 18:46

I had tl during cs 3 years ago. No idea of method used as it wasn't explained. Some heavier periods since but that could be because I'm entering perimenopause. I have no regrets and much prefer being off hormones... although I'm moody as hell today with pms and election news AngryBlush

Thank you ladies, great to hear other people's real life experiences. I think I can handle slightly heavier periods.

Elmo that sounds awful Sad Did you have heavy periods before having it done or was it just afterwards?

It was after 4th c-section, and they were so horrendous. I took photos as thought no one would believe me. Day surgery sorted it though, wish had done it sooner.

Now I am free of contraception worries and periods. win

HerRoyalNotness · 13/12/2019 22:21

I had mine 2.5yrs ago clipped during Cs. It takes a little while after and I was getting bored. I wanted them to hurry up so I could go see DD. They Sent off the clipped bits to verify they’d clipped the tubes which was weird. What else would the dr be cutting?! Mind you they’re very risk averse I’m the US. Didn’t add anything to recovery at all.

HerRoyalNotness · 13/12/2019 22:22

I actually take the pill now as well to help with moods. I only get a period 4 times a year and they’re not heavy at all

GiantKitten · 13/12/2019 22:32

I had it done 26-27 years ago. No idea what technique was used. Periods were certainly very heavy afterwards but it never occurred to me that there might be a connection Confused

7 years after that I had breast cancer & chemo stopped periods dead, which was a massive relief.

Then 2 years ago I had my ovaries & tubes removed (after being diagnosed with BRCA2 gene mutation). I’d had 4 CSs, & the gynae muttered darkly about adhesions & risk of bowel & bladder damage, but it was all fine & everything removed was healthy. (I’m tall & wide though & babies weren’t huge so I guess there was lots of space inside)

GiantKitten · 13/12/2019 22:34

I was under the impression my tubes were “tied” (that was the phrase used) but I don’t know what was actually done.

CantspellWontspell · 13/12/2019 22:40

During 4th c-section I had them clipped (I think). Slightly heavier periods but nothing to bad.

nildesparandum · 13/12/2019 22:40

I had this 47 years ago.During caesarean delivery of DC2 under GA.
My first child was born by caesarean and I was told during my second pregnancy to make this my last child.
I had slight heavier periods after, which got worse before the menopause.
The one thing that really affected me was my MIL telling me I had committed a mortal sin by having the tubal tie done. Those words were worse than the period problems.

Airhows · 13/12/2019 23:04

Omg nildes Sad Flowers Catholic guilt? Thank goodness women have more bodily autonomy without judgement nowadays.

Thanks for the input everyone, my fears have been allayed 👍

I am currently having to make the same decision! I have always had heavy painful periods and so I think I am leaning towards getting the mirena instead of tl as it seems crazy to do both!

PerkyPomPoms · 13/12/2019 23:08

I did nine years ago but mine were clipped. No difference re periods except much less painful.

TotallyKerplunked · 13/12/2019 23:23

I had tl done during cs 2 years ago, not sure of method as I didn't know they would remove the entire tube! Had horrendous periods since and agonising ovulation pain which I didn't have before, maybe I should have researched more before having it done but I felt pressured into it.

HoHoHoik · 13/12/2019 23:23

I was offered it before my CS with DC4 and declined, the surgeon said she agreed and wouldn't recommend it anyway as a vasectomy is far simpler and has less risk of both failure and complications. We didn't discuss it any further so I couldn't say what the stats are on each.
