Do you have black peppercorns in a gin and tonic ?

There's a couple of smart bars near me where this goes on. I get the idea of a slice of citrus fruit or cucumber - they add a little flavour and look nice. But I don't know what peppercorns can do for G&T.

Not sure about peppercorns, but I add juniper berries to mine and it’s a nice addition!

luckygreeneyes · 11/12/2019 09:53

Are you sure it’s not juniper? Looks very similar

LordEmsworth · 11/12/2019 09:58

It depends on the gin, surely? The art of gin garnishes is a very complex one, peppercorns will suit some gins but not others. Smart bars will presumably have the "right" garnish for each gin rather than bung lemon in all of them...

I bet it's juniper seeds - a key aromatic of gin and look just like black peppercorns. though it could be that the bar is so cool and ahead of us that it is just peppercorns. Grin

I have peppercorns in a G&T, but only with Hendricks gin. It just enhances the flavours in the gin a little bit, you don't actually taste pepper.

Yes, surely those are juniper berries?

Don't worry, the so-called gin-naissance will soon end and we will be back to Ice and a Slice. It's going to be rum next, apparently.

Though I must say I quite like a big bit of orange zest and a sprig of rosemary in a gin and tonic. Unusually contemporary for me.

Ophir gin uses black peppercorns and I think it’s horrible, sorry!

WildRosie · 11/12/2019 10:12

Thank you all. It occurred to me after I pressed enter that they might be juniper berries. Black peppercorns might suit some gins though - there's that many of them around these days.

I've seen peppercorns in gin at my local pub - plus grapefruit, rosemary and other stuff. Def peppercorns not juniper berries
Tbh I think they may be a nice addition to a flavourless or cheap gin but I just think such stuff covers up the taste of the gin especially if it is specifically flavoured itself - like ophir or rhubarb or raspberry or whatever

WildRosie · 11/12/2019 10:57

My gin tastes are restricted to Tanqueray and the premium supermarket stuff - they're good value and suit me very well. A wedge of lime and my own chunks of hard, clear ice which I make in polythene snap boxes in the freezer. Takes a bit of effort but the resulting ice hardly melts and chills the beverage nicely.
No peppercorns !

Where does one buy juniper berries ?
