Cutting alcohol does make you lose weight

I was musing about this about 3 weeks ago. So i decided to cut down. I was probably having 2 bottles a week, plus a few beers at e weekend. I’ve cut right down, nothing in the week,. Lost half a stone.

I think a lot of it is I’ve lost the late night cheese habit with the second glass of wine and also don’t feel the need for a big carby breakfast....

I’ve found this too. My drinking was getting unhealthy at 3-4 bottles of wine a week. I’ve cut down to one bottle over a weekend and lost 1 1/2 stone over a couple of months.
Like you say it really reduces your appetite when not tipsy or hungover. I would eat so much crap the day after.

It does for me

Drinking wine makes me crave crisps and dips, salty snacks, cheese etc....

It definitely does for me (lost six pounds in four weeks when I cut booze out almost completely) but seems to make no difference with DP. I wonder if it’s down to individual metabolism.

Yep. I always do dry January and lose a few pounds (I don't drink that much anyway). Considering a dry quarter/six months. Have discovered Erdinger no alcohol beer. Palatable and far fewer calories. A pint of lager is equivalent to a slice of pizza!

Roselilly36 · 11/12/2019 09:25

Yes definitely makes a difference, saves a huge amount of calories. Most people don’t want to hear it though! Someone I know lost 6st, everyone asked how did you do it? But looked horrified when he said cut out alcohol for a couple of years! Combined with healthy eating and exercise of course.

I lost weight at the start of pregnancy from cutting it out! Now still only have an occasional red wine and will have some baileys at Xmas but don’t miss it. Definitely stops the late night calorie binge!

LolaSmiles · 11/12/2019 09:31

I always thought of alcohol as liquid calories, a bit like fizzy drinks.

MoiraRose · 11/12/2019 09:32

Definitely not for me. I didn't touch a drop for several months and lost not an ounce.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 11/12/2019 09:33

In theory given my food intake, I should about 3 stone more than I do. I don't drink at all now, it makes me ill.

ffswhatnext · 11/12/2019 09:49

Just look at men who give up drinking and loose the 'beer belly'. Every diet recommends stop/reduce alcohol and fizzy drinks.

The mn favourite of G&T has 190 calories, 119 with slimline tonic.
Champagne has fewer calories than sweet white wine.
Vodka tonic 175 calories
A pint 208 calories
I could go on. These are based on pub servings, so now imagine how many calories are in your home-made g&t. Even the pub standard is still the equivalent of a meal.

This time I've lost around 2 stone. Nothing in my diet has changed, and I was on bed rest for a lot of that time which I was dreading because of the potential weight gain. And because I stopped drinking, the amount of fizzy also reduced because it's not always in the house.

timeforawine · 11/12/2019 09:52

Didn't work for me:-( did dry Jan and lost nothing, maybe i eat more when not drinking and it balances out. Boo

KaptenKrusty · 11/12/2019 10:08

I quit drinking beer all together 2 years ago now - i will drink vodka & Soda on nights out (Not that there are that many of them these days) Have stopped drinking at home as well !

I lost so much weight really quickly as a result
