How do I do these two things at work?

  1. Be more assertive and stick up for myself, but without being horrible, or consumed with the fear that everyone will hate me if I do.
  1. Get over my crippling fear of being sacked.

It's a very tall ask. I know.

I always think, well if I am doing the job wrong then I would rather someone told me, gave me a chance to improve and sacked me if necessary.

When asked to do something, I consider, is it my job role, and do I have capacity currently. If no to either I say no or discuss with my manager. If it's my manager asking I suggest a way I can find the time (if I don't do something else). I believe in being flexible and saying yes as often as I can but I don't think it's good for them or me if I get overloaded stressed and leave.

What if your colleagues hate you for saying no - What if they admire you for being assertive? Do you hate people who say no? Flip it and free yourself up.

What is the context?

In what kind of situation do you need to be more assertive and about what topic.

Setting aside your fear, if you can. Realistically what is the chance of being sacked?

Are you on thin ground at the moment? Is your workplace likely to sack people for assertive yet professional actions?
