House sharing advice?

Hi All!

I am a professional working 21 year old and am looking to move out of my family home for various reasons.
I am looking at house sharing to save a bit of money. I have never done this before and were wondering if anyone house shares or has in the past? Do you have any advice on it? What are the rules of house sharing? Are there schedules with the washing machine etc?

Would love to hear anyone's opinions and advice on it. As nobody i know has ever done it before. Thanks.

Are you looking to house share as a single person or with a child?

Most people house share at some point, but usually as a single person.

Best advice is to look around and chat to the current occupants to get a sense of how things are done and split with regards to cleaning, bills, guests, bathroom etc.

I used to houseshare in my younger days. No rules as such, any more than anywhere else. Just clean up after yourself, don't leave the kitchen/bathroom in a mess. Remember that other people need the bathroom in the morning as well as you; don't make too much noise too late in the evening. Pay rent on time. Just general courtesy really.

I have house shared- one piece of advice to you is to move into somewhere that is rented out as a house share rather than where one person is the owner.

I lived with the son of my landlady in their family home and it was hell on earth (for many reasons) but the real issue was that as it was 'his' home he didn't feel obliged to do things such as wash up after his meals, take his washing out of the machine within 2 days and I ended up having to ask nag him constantly.

That said, I know lots of people who have had lovely housemates and great experiences.

I've lived communally in my late teens until my mid 20s, both as a student and whilst working, so lots of experience with this! My best advice would be: either agree a washing up Rota or ideally a dishwasher- the most arguments stemmed from dirty dishes. In a similar vein consider your own crockery so that at least your own dishes are washed and available. Agree bills and payment of these in advance and stick to it. Be considerate of each other's schedules and sleeping habits - early birds v night owls for example.
That's off the top of my head, will think of more Grin
