Background:My mum is 86 years old and lives on her own. She is not in the best of health but does live independently. She lives on a nice estate and owns her own home.
I am concerned because the local community is erecting a defibrillator right outside her house. Along side her open lawn at the front is a gravel entry way on one side belonging to the electricity board which houses something of theirs - not sure what.
But to any passer-by it just looks like it's in mum's garden. It was initially meant to be attached to the wall of the electricity company's structure but they wanted money for that so a wooden structure has been erected to house the defib. This means that rather than being set back it is now right at the edge of the inner side of the pavement, facing in a direction so that when mum is in her chair it is constantly in her line of vision.
I am concerned that people will perceive mum as being connected to it, somehow, in a custodial way, because of where it is, and wondering if people will be knocking on the door with any questions about it, or to use the phone 999. It would be a great way for someone with ill-intent to gain access to mum's house.
My mum was never asked if she minded the defib being placed there.
It's great the community has one but most defibs seem to be in a more communal place such as near some shops, or near a library or a school or community centre etc - not somewhere so residential.
There is a corner shop a few minutes walk away from mum's house with a community notice board and plenty of space for the defib without encroaching on anyone's home. Surely it would have been better to put it there?
I feel I want to raise my objections and concerns but am I overreacting?
