Environmentally friendly paper plates or similar, is there such a thing?

I'm hosting Christmas this year for 15. We are usually a family of 3.

We are doing 3 courses for a late lunch, then a late tea (all for 15). Breakfast the following day for 7.

We don't have have enough crockery, cutlery or glassware. I'm thinking of borrowing some but also maybe using some disposable crockery.

We do have a dishwasher but a cycle takes almost 3 hours so turn around is v v slow.

I've met with objections to disposable crockery from DM And DMIL on environmental grounds. I understand their concern but find it a little galling as neither of them are likely to roll up their sleeves and help with washing or clearing up. I'm
usually very careful about waste but just this once am tempted to take the easy route. It would r sa lily help with clearing up, mean I don't have to wash up between courses or find places to store all the extras in tiny kitchen.

I just think a few paper plates for tea and bowls for pudding would make life so much easier.

Can I do this in an environmentally friendly way?

What about buying some extra crockery at local charity shops and donating it back after Christmas?

Where i live we put paper plates in our green compost bins.

charity shop (or even cheap supermarket fare) the once clean again you can take to a food bank.

Extra crockery from a second hand place was my idea too.

Glass plates in particular could either be re-donated or recycled.

Or ask guests to bring some of their own (which they might want to wash carefully themselves).

Bamboo plates & cutlery

Banana leaf plates. We had them for our wedding (we had a relaxed meal with a hog roast as opposed to a full-on three course meal). They do cutlery as well.

DM and DMIL bring their own plates?

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 09/12/2019 21:03

Yes ask your guests to bring some crockery with them.

If DM & MIL are coming by car ask them to bring a few plates etc to use??? Obviously it’s not an option if using public transport.

Surely your dishwasher has a shorter cycle? My dishwasher shortest cycle is 60 minutes

No don’t use throw away plates etc, so much waste for no reason.

I guess you could get some plastic picnic style ones, the kind you keep and re use
