Brand new Christmas traditions

My boys are one and two. Dh didn't celebrate christmas as a child and doesnt care about Christmas although will join in

So...christmas is MY oyster. What traditions would you pick?

We've picked a new decoration for the tree and the boys have each made one to hang. I'm planning on making a gingerbread house with them and was thinking that Rudolph and Santa would enjoy carrot cake so we'll make that on the 24th.

Dh does the catering. I don't particularly get involved in that apart from to make sure we book our online food delivery time. Dh will also do the pre christmas deep clean. I basically happily do everything else therefore it's my choice what we get to do.

We are hosting the 25th, on our own the 26th, visiting the 27th and hosting the 28th.

Does anyone have any favourite traditions that you would recommend for the whole christmas season? Bonus if you have some adult traditions included also

New Pyjamas Given on Xmas eve

I go for a walk just as it's getting dark with DD and we spot lights and Christmas trees in the streets around us. Started when she was very small, she's now nearly 11.

We do new pj's (well one dd demanded an upgrade to a silk nightdress this year, they are both adults now!) and we do midnight mass, used to go for a walk in the countryside on the 27th but we are scattering this year to see various boyfriends in different cities ... what a difference! National express vouchers were on their Christmas lists!

We have stopped buying presents for any adult family members, I buy a couple of bits for my dc but they are getting older and don't need anything. Instead we now hire a big house by the sea, and 12+ of us descend there for a week. No one hosts cause it neutral territory, everyone does there bit and we all have a wonderful time walking on the beaches and playing games . We are lucky as both my family and DH family all get on incredibly well.

My dc get a new Christmas decoration in their stocking every year. They love it.
Also new jammies on Christmas Eve

@bert3400 that sounds just incredible. I'd love that but various family members work and all have masses of extended family.

As far as adults go, I'm buying for dh, mum, step dad and nan. I've also bought for a couple of special friends.

We have mum, step dad and nan on christmas day. Are going to cousins and their extended family on the 27th - it's a bit complex but they are distant family/non family that we are close do. And then my brothers family on the 28th.

I'll pass on to you one of ours. The men, including male guests, do all the washing up on Christmas Day. Women aren't allowed to help.

HalyardHitch · 09/12/2019 07:46

Haha incredible. My mums family tradition is worse than that...men go to the pub from 12-1. It's from the days that there were so many of us and wanted space to do Christmas dinner. We did it last year and I quite enjoyed the peace and quiet and a large glass of wine. I'm not sure if we'll be continuing that one. It feels a bit misogynistic to me and I don't know how dh will get Christmas dinner done Crown Wink

Make a vow that you and your DC will never be twee enough to say Pjs or jammies.

One of ours is a new party dress/smart outfit given to the children a few days before Christmas. In my childhood and when my dd was little it was always to be worn first at midnight mass, since we stopped going its for visiting/hosting relatives or christmas parties.

We build Christmas-themed Lego. Started a couple of years ago with Santa's workshop and have since added the Christmas train, the Winter Village fire station and this year the Gingerbread House. The sets get boxed back up when the tree comes down and then I bring them out on Christmas Eve May need to start earlier if we get many more sets though Grin
