N Ireland mumsnetters. How on earth do we change the situation?

With the election coming up, this has been really playing on my mind. We need a functioning health service. How do we get one? I don't vote DUP or Sinn Fein, but nearly everyone else in my constituency seems to and I feel so powerless.

I feel pretty horrified by the education situation too, but the health service is on a whole other level, it is properly scary.

I don't want to be in politics myself, I am not robust enough for that, but I want someone to step up and say 'enough is enough' and yet I don't even seem to have anyone to vote for who is willing to do that. I have been reading all the election literature through my door and there is very little mention of the health service by any of the parties, how can they be ignoring such a huge issue?

So so so delighted to see the 2 DUP seats gone! But concerned about Boris and his Brexit plan. I'm watching the Currency markets with interest. Was that a bounce effect last night with the surge in the pound?

motherofdoodles · 13/12/2019 08:47

Well that was a night and a half!

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 13/12/2019 09:01

SF in here which was predicted but look!

Alliance vote share up by 10.3!! UUP up and Aontú up. SF, SDLP and DUP all down.

It’s a small win in my book.

Well done to Stephen farry! Great news for alliance. So glad DUP took a quare knock.

I'm disappointed Naomi didn't get in but happy about the rest of the results. Glad DUP didn't get North Down.

I was hoping Gavin Robinson would live to regret his 5 long years display of egotistical crowing but there's always next time.

Linwin · 13/12/2019 09:34

Same feeling here @FlaviaAlbia I do wish Naomi would have won E Belfast but happy with the rest.
Here in Lagan Valley we were so heartened to see Jeffery Donaldson’s majority massively cut with Alliance the second party.

Nigel Dodds thoroughly deserved to lose his seat and fall on his Brexit Sword.
Absolutely disgusted with Arlene Foster’s comments this morning, such a crap leader. The DUP need to find a way to move forward with the country, if they remain stuck in the past they will be left behind.

implantsandaDyson · 13/12/2019 10:52

Linwin I'm in the same constituency- as are my parents and pils. Out of the 6 of us - everyone voted Alliance. My Dad, pils and I were all first time Alliance voters - my husband and mum would be Alliance voters in general.

powershowerforanhour · 13/12/2019 10:56

Arlene has just used the phrase 'pan-nationalist front'. It's a long time since I heard that one!

Yes that was a blast from the past! What a typical regressive, demonising, tired old comment. Well done Alliance and the SDLP for their seats and increased overall vote share.
Now the DUP have outlived their usefulness to BoJo and friends I think it's safe to assume they will be completely ignored at Westminster (as will the 3 new MPs but hey ho) so they might deign to deign to make an effort to reopen the small pond at Stormont again.

powershowerforanhour · 13/12/2019 11:21

Arlene has just used the phrase 'pan-nationalist front'.

Remind me again why the DUP didn't field a candidate in Fermanagh and South Tyrone? Is it chilly in that glass house of yours Arlene? Like I said before, I'm a unionist but come on....

MissisBee · 13/12/2019 15:10

Pan-nationalist front? When Alliance had the biggest increase in vote share in almost every constituency? What is she on?
Very pleased to now have an Alliance MP and I think the NI result is about as good as we can expect. Hope we have a Stormont vote soon to carry on the momentum

I don't think SF/DUP will want another election. They both lost significant ground at this one. They'll want to get Stormont restored as they have no power at Westminster, and I suspect they'll suddenly do a deal before the end of the year.

Highly frustrating because other parties have been asking for talks for ages, and have been working as hard as they can to get things moving, but I guess it's better late than never.
