Advice needed for an exhausted baby with tonsillitis and bronchiolitis

My 10month old DD has been diagnosed with the following above.
She is on amoxicillin for 10days and has a pump to help open the airways.
I just need any motherly advice on how to keep her settled Sad neither of us have had any sleep this whole weekend. She is vomiting when she has a major coughing fit, which means continually changing her wet clothes to keep warm.
I hate seeing her so poorly and I feel so helpless!!
All I can do is give big cuddles and let her know I’m here.

How were her oxygen levels when they checked them? What is in the pump? Just asking because ds (14m) was hospitalised with bronchiolitis, and your DD sounds worseSad No advice really, just make sure she isn't getting dehydrated

OneTooManyBathtimes · 07/12/2019 23:52

All my DS wanted was cuddles when his eardrums burst. Nothing else would work. I had at least a week of him just sleeping on my chest, or in my arms.

It's hard, when they're this young and you don't know what to do.

SexNamesRFab · 07/12/2019 23:52

Have you tried steam to help her breathing? Sit in the bathroom with her with the shower running hot and all windows shut so that the room gets really steamy. Not in the shower, just in the room so that she breathes the steam.

Oh dear poor her and poor you, too Flowers
I'm sure you're doing this already but give her paracetamol to keep her comfortable.
Use a humidifier - it relieves the coughing considerably.
And hang on in there.
Don't be a martyr though - do you have a partner? If so he can take turns with you so you can get some rest.

GreenTulips · 07/12/2019 23:54

Also try Olbas Oil, a few drops in boiling water to steam a room really helps

NameChange30 · 07/12/2019 23:56

YY you can get a children's version of Olbas Oil which we used and it seemed to help

SleepingStandingUp · 07/12/2019 23:57

Op please keep an eye on her hydration levels. Any dip in her fontinelle (sp?) / soft spot and she needs to go in to hospital. If she's sticking up that much I'd be partic concerned about dehydration. If you can get her to drink dioralyte that will help.

Bronc is awful even without the tonsils, think it's just as much cuddles and cat naps as possible. Do you have anyone around to help you? Is, Dad in the scene?

Lovetochat1 · 08/12/2019 00:00

Her oxygen levels came back ok, just slightly wheezy. The normal ventolin pump, which I believe they prescribe a lot for people with a bad chest.
Thank you all for your quick replies! I’m currently in bed, upright sitting with little lady on my chest hoping for a miracle! Star

Someone suggested the dyson humidifier? But wow is it expensive! Will an ordinary one do or should i pull my finger out and pay for ‘the best’

One tired mama over here Sad

Damp towels over the radiators in her room will make the room more humid too - I’ve always found that helps.

Cuddles are the best medicine though. Hope she’s feeling better soon!

NameChange30 · 08/12/2019 00:03

You don't need a Dyson one, any humidifier will do the job, although I'd make sure it's a quiet one.

Lovetochat1 · 08/12/2019 00:04

@SleepingStandingUp we did go a&e last night as that was my biggest worry! But after 7 hours of not being seen we paid for a Private doctor and they gave her dioralyte and checked her over throughly, she sips cool boiled water very well and keeps it down. It’s the milk she brings up. I was advised by GP to water down milk more so it’s not laying on her chest so to speak.

She doesn’t vomit everytime, only if the episode is very bad.
Thank you for your help ! Star I appreciate it all x

Oh and another thing that helps when they are congested: tilt the cot so that her head is slightly raised. You can get a wedge to go under the mattress or find a secure way to raise one end of the cot.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/12/2019 00:10

Dioralyte over water whenever possible op, it'll really make a difference.

Can someone come and give you a sleep tomorrow? You need rest too

Elllicam · 08/12/2019 00:11

We recently had my 11 month old sick with bronchiolitis and did the humidifier, ran the shower in the en suite, snufflebabe to back, chest and feet, olbas oil on a towel on the radiator.

Lovetochat1 · 08/12/2019 00:11

Partner - he is on the scene, yes. He is very hands on and doesn’t mind being covered in the vomit ha!
He is out tonight for his Xmas work do but will be home shortly as I said I’m struggling on my own! I feel so guilty for telling him to come home but I have work tomorrow aswell and I need some sort of sleep!

Oil diffuser for the room. £20 on amazon, next day delivery and puts moisture into the room. You don't need to add oils to it if you don't want to but a few drops of olbas oil, peppermint eucalyptus would be good.

Make sure fluids (any fluids at all) are offered all the time.

Hope the wee one is on the mend soon.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/12/2019 00:21

Don't feel guilty, it's not like shes got a sniffle. A repeatedly vommy baby is hard bloody work and you need some rest before work if there's no way you can get out of your shift (to sleep!!)
I'm hoping as he knows she's so poorly he's not been drinking much.
Hope she manages some sleep, poor thing, and that you can get a shower and a nap too.
