Just that

I’d like this to be a man job I could eliminate from my responsibilities, but no man, or plug

Too hard?

I am watching with interest!! Most of my neighbours seem to have the leads fed in through various windows so presumably they are plugged in inside, but the shape of our house / positiin of sockets makes it a bit difficult. I was in the Range yesterday and they had a lot of battery operated ones, I'm considering those.

Chrysanthemum5 · 07/12/2019 10:58

I bought solar ones but then realised the flaw in that is that's it's winter so they never get enough light to work Confused

hamstersarse · 07/12/2019 10:58

Oh ok....battery operated seems like a winner

So dense sometimes...that was obvious 🤪

The thin wire is fed in through a window and plugged in inside, often into an extension cable if there isnt a socket close enough to where it comes in

dementedpixie · 07/12/2019 11:00

We only normally have icicles outside and then have silhouettes on the insides of the window

DinosApple · 07/12/2019 11:02

Another watching with interest!

We could get some plugs through to the front but it would be a bit Heath Robinson and they'd need to go through our bathroom.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 07/12/2019 11:02

feed the wire through the letter box and then use an extension lead after re attatching the plug in the inside then have a draughty winter like we had to endure one year thanks to DH and his half cocked ideas!!! The year after he tried to drill a hole in the wall again another marvellous idea not! This year we have lights up at the window and on the tree only....not going through that charade again!!! I too am watching your post with interest as to how to do it the right way!

Rockbird · 07/12/2019 11:03

We have a vent at the front of our house which opens in the living room right by some sockets, result! Otherwise I'd be floundering too.

Pipandmum · 07/12/2019 11:05

The wreath and small trees are battery powered (get ones that go on for six hours then off so you don't have to manually turn them on). The icicle lights hanging from the first floor are then fed through a small notch in the sash window to a socket inside.

helpfulperson · 07/12/2019 11:15

If its something you intend to do every year gst an electrician to put a couple of proper sockets outside.

MillieMoodle · 07/12/2019 11:15

For one set we feed the wires in through the window, they're thin enough that the window can be closed still. For the other set we feed them through the edge of the front door where it's on the hinges - again the wires are thin enough to be able to shut the door.

katewhinesalot · 07/12/2019 11:18

Our cables are flat and thin enough to just feed through the window.

Omg you are my spirit animal. Placemarking for tips.

Ikea used to do some great outdoor solar lights. I bought loads of them and they were cheap and worked well. Unfortunately it looks as though they have been discontinued. Solar lights will work in the winter, just for less time.

Thehagonthehillwithtinsel · 07/12/2019 11:25

Wishore people had timers. We have had flashing icicles on the house opposite every night since November.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 07/12/2019 11:25

We feed through all the various windows and then squash them shut 😬. I asked DH about getting a few outdoor plugs for Christmas lights, but he pointed out that most of the transformers for outdoor lights day the transformer has to stay indoors so 🤷‍♀️

RainbowCookie · 07/12/2019 11:29

Am in the only one with outside plug sockets? Ours are like normal sockets but have a plastic cover. How do you plug in your lawn mowers without an outside socket? No Christmas lights though - Baa humbug

smemorata · 07/12/2019 11:29

We have solar ones which last about two hours a day. Which is enough for me. Bah humbug. You can also get solar/battery ones so they stay on when the solar power is not enough.

Trewser · 07/12/2019 11:32

How do you plug in your lawn mowers without an outside socket?

You can plug in lawnmowers??

ByAppointmentTo · 07/12/2019 11:33

@RainbowCookie Feed the flex through the window and use extension leads.

WeeDangerousSpike · 07/12/2019 11:36

In through the window, shut the window, plug in to socket / extension lead.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 07/12/2019 11:37

The batteries don't last - plus most battery ones are inside only.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2019 13:10

I use an outdoor extension cable attached to a kitchen socket to plug my lawn mower in

Sprinklemetinsel · 07/12/2019 13:17

Be a bit careful, we've had lights nicked from the front of our house. That's why now we use plug in ones with the skinny wire through the window which can still shut.

VenusClapTrap · 07/12/2019 13:20

Through windows. As someone else said, it is all very Heath Robinson.
