This week our house has been struck by a winter bug. Lethargic, feverish, coughing, aches and headaches. I'm on antibiotics for a chest infection and I thought ds7 was getting it too. Booked him a doctors appointment for after school today so if he needs antibiotics he can get them before the weekend. But since then the school have sent him home. He's got a temperature, headache, still not coughing much but generally unwell. And now he's just vomited. I don't think it's a sickness bug, I think more likely the sickness was brought on by the temp and headache. Can I still take him to the doctors?? I'm really worried.

Why would you not take him? Confused

dreamerofdreams27 · 06/12/2019 12:50

Because he's been sick and sometimes they don't like you taking sicky people into a doctors surgery

Damntheman · 06/12/2019 12:55

I'd call the surgery and ask what they recommend really. They might shunt him straight in if they know he's been vomiting, they might be totally okay with him coming in as normal. Sounds like he should see a doctor anyway.

We dont like it when very infectious people visit - id call and see what they advise.

Eeeeek2 · 06/12/2019 12:56

Can you phone and ask whether to wait in the car (if close enough) and them phone you when it's your turn. Or if they have an isolated room for you to wait

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 06/12/2019 13:01

I would never have wondered whether I could take a sick child to the GP or not!

If they need seeing by a doctor then your answer is right there.

dreamerofdreams27 · 06/12/2019 13:01

He definitely needs to see a doctor so I will ring and see what they suggest. Can sickness sometimes be down to high temp?

OP posts:
CAG12 · 06/12/2019 13:07

Yup. Paracetomol lowers temp. Try him on some Calpol and then re-check temp

Looneytune253 · 06/12/2019 13:10

Sickness can be down to a high temp yes. Call the surgery they may have a separate space for you to wait. That's happened to us before for a gp appointment (chicken pox) and a hosp appointment (diarrhoea). We were given a separate room to wait in

BlueEyedBengal · 06/12/2019 13:17

Give him calpol and make sure he has water at hand and phone the surgery for advice on his symptoms as better safe than sorry. Also if he was sick that would mean 48 hrs from the last time he was sick. But get that advice from the go

I took him to the gp and she hasn't given him anything as she said his chest isn't rattling and his ears, throat etc are ok. But he has a raging temperature. Since we got home I've given calpol and plenty of water but he's just been sick again. Can I give calpol again this soon? It's been ages since he's been ill and I've forgotten the rules. I don't think it's a sickness bug even though he's been sick twice, I think that's more to do with his temp. Really scares me when he's like this.

complicat3d · 06/12/2019 16:01

It's 4 hours for Calpol as it's paracetamol.
You could give him ibuprofen if his temp isn't coming down as it is different. But def don't give him another dose of Calpol until the 4 hour window has passed as it's dangerous to do so.
Hope he gets better soon. Hopefully it's just a viral infection that doesn't need antibiotics

dreamerofdreams27 · 06/12/2019 16:05

I just thought since he's thrown up the last dose of calpol it might be ok but I'll stick with ibuprofen. She seemed to think it's a viral flu like illness. Feel so sorry for him

OP posts:
OctoberLovers · 06/12/2019 16:08

What is his temperature?

How is he in himself?

Looneytune253 · 06/12/2019 16:41

The flu bug that's doing the rounds also includes some sickness. There's schools been closed because of it here and it's a flu/sickness bug. A friend and her family had it. Adults were fluey and the younger children were vomiting continually

Aycharow · 06/12/2019 16:54

Our local hospital has appealed for people with vomiting bugs to stay at home and not go to hospital, so I'm guessing that would apply to doctors' surgeries too. Give the surgery a call and see what they say.

dreamerofdreams27 · 06/12/2019 17:02

He's very listless and tired and pale. He's talking/conscious and able to walk to the loo. He's not eating but is managing to drink a little. He's only been sick twice over the day and when he's had sickness bugs before it's been hourly sickness if not more. Very little coughing but temp is still high. I guess all we can do is ride it out but it's very worrying.

As an update - ds is much better now. Temp has come down and he is eating a little and wanting to play. He is due to have his flu spray on Friday - just wondering if he's still going to be ok to have it after having this viral illness? (Providing recovery continues of course)

Great news and such a relief for you!

dreamerofdreams27 · 08/12/2019 12:12

Thanks it's been a crap weekend! Am just wondering if he will still be allowed his flu spray next week because I know it's sometimes refused it they are or have been recently unwell
