Hi
I would really appreciate any suggestions of Agatha Christie books for my 14 year old DD.
And any other murder mysteries!
Many thanks 😊

And Then There Were None is a good one (as is the history of its various titles over the years!)

Overdueanamechange · 05/12/2019 23:35

Mine enjoy the Poirot books.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 05/12/2019 23:46

Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series is great. About an 11 yr old chemistry obsessed amateur sleuth solves a mysterious murder, think young Miss Marple!
They're not children's books despite the main character being a child though so you may want to give them the once over first.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 06/12/2019 00:20

Miss Marple is the best - The Body in the Library is the first one, I think, but Nemesis is the best one.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 06/12/2019 00:21

Another good standalone one is Murder Is Easy - not one of the main detectives but a good story. Murder on the Orient Express is great for Poirot.

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2019 00:22

My first ever Christie read as a teen was Murder on the Orient Express. I read it cover to cover in one sitting & was totally hooked from then on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/12/2019 02:29

A really good Miss Marple is Sleeping Murder.

'The 4.50 from Paddington' is another.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/12/2019 02:36

The Mysterious Affair At Styles and the Pale Horse were my favourites as a teen. Also Sparkling Cyanide, Endless Night, By The Pricking of My Thumbs and Evil Under The Sun. Actually all of them...

Nancydrawn · 06/12/2019 02:37

When I was a teen I liked Poirot more than Miss Marple, who I didn't quite grasp.

Toomanygerbils · 06/12/2019 03:08

Mary Higgins Clark

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 06/12/2019 03:46

My favourite as a teen was the Miss Marple short story collection “The Blue Geranium & other stories”.

Also recommend the audio version read by the incomparable Joan Hickson.

boris105 · 07/12/2019 15:28

I'd say any were great for teens. Robin Stevens has a series of detective novels - Murder Most Unladylike they are great books enjoyed at any age from 10+

Seeline · 07/12/2019 15:35

My DD loved all the Miss Marple books at that age.

She has also enjoyed the No 1 ladies detective agency books.

Whyamihere · 07/12/2019 15:45

Crooked house is a good one and is my 15 year old dd’s favourite, my favourites were always the Poirot ones.

Agree with Murder is easy too, another favourite of mine.

MarySidney · 07/12/2019 15:48

Some Christie standalones are quite good fun. The Man in the Brown Suit and They Came to Baghdad both have young women as the central character. Secret Adversary, the first Tommy and Tuppence book, is also quite good fun.

Dorothy L. Sayers is the other really big name in Golden Age crime fiction, but your DD might not be quite old enough yet. You could try her with The Nine Tailors, which is a standalone.

Some of Georgette Heyer's romances also have a mystery plot - The Talisman Ring, The Tollgate and The Reluctant Widow, for example. She also wrote murder mysteries set in her own time, not as good as Christie, imo.

Ellmau · 07/12/2019 16:26

Robin STevens' retro series is fun.

Josephine tey would be worth trying.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2019 16:36

DD liked Sherlock Holmes.

I read quite a lot of Agatha Christies as a teen. I can't remember them all but one which stuck in my mind was The Mystery of the Blue Train.

MissLadyM · 07/12/2019 16:55

I love them all but Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express are great reads.

Lllot5 · 07/12/2019 16:58

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners
I love the Pale Horse. I’m hoping it’s going to be on tv the Christmas.
But in answer to the question I’d start with abc murders or death in the Nile or evil under the sun.

Blueroses99 · 07/12/2019 16:59

Mrs McGintys Dead and A Murder is Announced have been my favourites since my teens. Also recommend a Mysterious Affair at Styles - Agatha Christie’s first novel and introduction to Poirot.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 07/12/2019 17:00

my 12 yo liked And Then There Were none, and Death Comes as the End. I quite like Christie, but they do need a warning regarding the racism and anti semitism.

NearlyOutedMyself · 07/12/2019 17:08

She might like the Ngaio Marsh 'Alleyne' books too. They're mostly set in England, there's a few abroad, France, Italy and I think New Zealand. A clutch of constables is good.

Bin85 · 07/12/2019 17:11

Murder at the Vicarage is a good one to start with .

Doryhunky · 07/12/2019 17:23

Cat among the pigeons is set in a boarding school and has teens as its protagonists. Poirot makes a late appearance! It is quite
A late Christie and quite modern!
