Does anyone with small children NOT routinely catch the dreaded bug?

I’m terrified of being sick. It’s awful this time of year, and worse since having DC - the bug is in their school at the moment and I am just privately living in terror of any of us catching it.

I just wondered how many have/have had DC going through school, and how often they/you catch it. Is it inevitable!?? I think social media can skew it as it sometimes makes it seem like the plague.

Thanks all.

I only just learnt that cleaning with anti bacteria doesn't stop norovirus. Has to be bleach.

Bumfuzzled · 05/12/2019 20:20

I’ve 2 young children and have struggled with bugs for several years. My mum suggested taking vitamin c with zinc. Probably/possibly coincidence but I’ve not caught anything yet since taking it.

*runs around touching wood and rubbing lucky talisman! It’s one of the first times I’ve actually listened to my mum too Grin

My son is v hardy and doesn’t tend to catch tummythings at all. He’s only been sick three times in 6 years I can recall, once for a tummy bug, once from an ear infection once from a virus.

As daughters got older she doesn’t get so much.

If they get anything they get a cold or two in the winter.

Most times they’re sick I don’t catch it or at worse feel a little nauseous for a day or two. I’m v bad with sick too

We hardly ever seem to get sickness bugs. I can't remember the last time we had one. When we do get them it tends to be one, maybe two people in the family who get it as well, not everyone.

HideYourBabiesAndYourBeadwork · 05/12/2019 20:23

I really really don’t want to jinx myself, but I rarely get the bugs my kids catch. They don’t often get them either tho **

troppibambini · 05/12/2019 20:32

Nope never catch it.
God knows how the amount of cleaning up I do.
I last had a sickness bug 6 years ago.
I have four dc who are pretty healthy but obviously do get ill occasionally.
The kids Last tummy bug was about six weeks ago.
Two out of the four kids had it I did spray a bit of dettol around and made sure they washed their hands well with dettol hand wash after the loo but that was it.

We seem pretty immune to bugs too. 1 every few years and doesn’t seem to spread around the house. I think we have strong stomachs. None of us are generally sickly but did have our fair share when’s DC were at nursery (private from 9m) I think we’ve all built up tolerance from that

Lipperfromchipper · 05/12/2019 20:41

Mine are 4 and 6.5 and have only had a bug twice. Both times were during school holidays 🤷‍♀️

Alittleprivacyplease · 05/12/2019 20:41

Mine managed 3 years in nursery and 6 years in primary before catching it. That was last year. School is rife with it just now though so also living in fear.

Lipperfromchipper · 05/12/2019 20:42

Well my 4 yr old ( well 4.3 ) isn’t even in school yet so they couldn’t be from school.

dottiedodah · 05/12/2019 20:52

I think it is important to keep things in perspective here. We are talking about a sickness bug lasting about 24 hours .Not Cancer FFS ! No one likes being sick, but sometimes it cant be avoided really .Washing hands and using anti bac gels may help .

happypotamus · 05/12/2019 20:57

I have 2 DC in school and I work in a hospital, and I don't get a vomiting bug every year. Despite working in a hospital and looking after patients with norovirus or similar every year, I still get unreasonably anxious about my DC catching it or me getting ill and taking it home so everyone else gets ill. DH did one of those genetic testing kits (probably was 23 And Me) a few years ago, and it showed he was genetically immune to norovirus, which I didn't know was possible. I very much hope he passed that on to DC.

happypotamus · 05/12/2019 20:59

I am also worried I have jinxed it now by posting that we don't regularly get ill, but the school has been randomly closed this week so we haven't been in contact with many other kids which should help.

Echobelly · 05/12/2019 21:03

Not really - I catch things more than the kids do, or when they do catch them, they get it off me and have it really mildly. Like, I have an awful cold, they have it mildly; I get norovirus every couple of years, one of the kids throws up once, but nothing else happens. Kids are a bit older now and we have never had the nightmare scenario some of my mates have had of everyone in the household being ill at once. So it can happen, but it's not inevitable.

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 05/12/2019 21:04

I have 2 dc in school and they rarely get sick.

I work in lots of schools and in my experience whenever there's a sickness bug going around usually only 3-5 children in the class catch it, even if someone's actually thrown up in the classroom. The worst I've ever known was 10 years ago when something like 35 children were off throughout the whole school I was working in at the time and there was talk of them having to close for deep cleaning.

Goldensummer · 05/12/2019 21:06

#touch wood, we've never caught any sickness bugs... ever.

Is it an immune system thing or what?

newbingepisodes · 05/12/2019 21:07

Get some support for emetophobia. Mine is not cured but a million trillion % better than it used to be!

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 05/12/2019 21:07

Sorry, I forgot to say that I never catch it. I can't remember the last time I caught a sickness bug. The worst I ever get is a cold.

daisypond · 05/12/2019 21:07

Never. Never had a sickness bug. The DC didn’t either.

managedmis · 05/12/2019 21:10

You mean D&V?

WellTidy · 05/12/2019 21:10

I have an 11yo and a 7yo. I hcontracted norovirus from my eldest when he was about 5 ‘months old, was hospitalised with it. I haven’t caught any sickness bugs from them since.

Fouroutoffour · 05/12/2019 21:12

Whilst DS is ill all the bloody time a lot, we have only caught RSV from him when he ha, which gave us colds, and DH also got hand, foot and mouth, though not too badly. Any D&V bug he's had (pretty much all of them then) had fortunately passed us by.

Anoisagusaris · 05/12/2019 21:13

Do you mean a D&V bug? Or any contagious sickness?

Mine never really get vomiting bugs. DD and DS had one each around 5 years ago.

I remember vomiting once as a young child. The only other times I did were alcohol-induced and after both C sections - morphine doesn’t agree with me.

Fucket · 05/12/2019 21:13

I’m strict about hand washing, when they come in from outside, when they’ve been to the toilet and just before they eat.

I’ve told them to avoid anyone who has been sick at school.

When we have had the big I designate one toilet for the sock person and quarantine it for their use. I then each the loo, handles, switches etc after every episode.

So far it’s stopped any big spreading around our home.

Most of the time we avoid the sick bug thankfully.
