What do you like about particular supermarkets that other ones don't do?

I have a Sainsburys, Tescos and Waitrose nearish me so can't speak for other supermarkets (will also visit M&S on occasion). Waitrose is still a novelty after being surrounded by Tescos!

For example:
Waitrose - fresh herbs cut and banded together so the stalks all point downwards, so after I've used some I just pour a little bit of water in the packet and store the rest upright in the fridge. Whereas Tesco fresh herbs are all muddled up so if I wanted to store them stalk-down I'd need to take them out and align them a bit.

M&S - does skinless salmon fillets - all others seem to be boneless but skin-on and sometimes I want no skin (so I have to faff cutting it).

Tescos - the 'Finest' ham comes in a reclosable packet, that actually works. Otherwise I put opened ham in a ziplock bag.

M&S also do nice food that other places don't but I was more thinking about comparable items where one shop does something more practically.

M&S do better ready meals.

Waitrose have better self-serve tills, they don't weigh your stuff and you can load straight into a bag. BUT they don't take cash which is annoying.

Lidl have the best coffee.

Not sure about practical differences like the way things are put into packaging.

BackforGood · 05/12/2019 17:09

Aldi, as I can be in, have done my shopping and be out again in under 20mins

Aldi as I don't have to wait around for 10mins at the checkout whilst customers take an AGE to think about packing their stuff and then paying.

Aldi as the quality is excellent and the prices are excellent

(Disclaimer - I don't work there nor have any shares - sadly) Grin

Other supermarket queues give me the rage now, when I have to wait to go through the checkout.

Legomadx2 · 05/12/2019 17:11

Waitrose have really nice and polite and helpful staff who don't scan your stuff so fast you end up shoving it into bags in a panic a la Aldi.

PositiveLife · 05/12/2019 17:26

I like the efficiency of the Aldi checkouts.

Sainsburys is easy parking and nice wide aisles (was great when the kids were younger as they weren't in the way of people trying to get past)

I use the local co-op quite often - it has decent offers, nice crusty bread rolls and I can walk there. I also like that they donate a % of what you spend and I can choose the charity my money goes towards.

I bloody hate Asda. The car park design is awful and the queus are often really long.

Morrisons is alright when the car park isn't heaving.

ScribblyGum · 05/12/2019 17:29

I like the aisles of jizz in Aldi, I like the beer section in Waitrose and I like the weigh your own fruit and veg and no plastic bags in Sainsbury’s.

crosser62 · 05/12/2019 17:31

Bloody love Aldi but wish it had a bakery section like Lidl.

KittensInABasket · 05/12/2019 17:51

Didn't mean to make it a vote Xmas Blush

poseysbobblehat · 05/12/2019 17:52

Aldi - for the aisle of wonder

Rudolphsjinglebells · 05/12/2019 18:29

Lidl for the bakery, especially the gouda cheese roll

ExpletiveFairylighted · 05/12/2019 18:33

We have Aldi, Waitrose and Sainsburys.

Our Aldi you are almost guaranteed a 10 min wait in the queue while Sainsburys and Waitrose there is rarely any queue.

Sainsburys - has everything I want, unlike Aldi or Waitrose.

Sainsburys and Waitrose have civilised car parks, Aldi's is hellish plus you have to faff about with trolley tokens.

roiseandjim · 05/12/2019 18:51

Waitrose for the freebies- love walking around with a sample of sushi and gin!
Morrison's purely because of the salad bar

roiseandjim · 05/12/2019 18:51

Oh and Tesco's because of scan and shop which I've just started and love!

KittensInABasket · 05/12/2019 18:57

That's a point, my old Sainsburys used to have a salad bar. The one I go to now doesn't and it's a big one.

Lidls bakery is the reason I will always be a fatty.

The 'middle of lidl' is interesting too.

Asda is bloody dreadful but is the only other supermarket near me where I can get the few bits i can't get in lidl. I try to avoid it as much as possible the layout and checkouts give me the absolute rage.

Bloodybridget · 05/12/2019 19:00

Our nearest is Morrisons, and I did mostly go there for years, but it's so badly run now that I've vowed never to shop there again. At the nearest Sainsbury's you have to pay to use the car park, the second nearest is quite tatty with poor stock, so I go to the third nearest which is well stocked with a huge car park. Nearest big Tesco is utterly depressing, and last time I went to Aldi on a weekday there were no staffed checkouts. I do go to Lidl every so often, it's fun and the staff are very nice, but I can't get everything I need there.

36degrees · 05/12/2019 19:15

Lidl for croissants
Waitrose for peace and quiet and naice shopping
Tesco if I can't be arsed going anywhere else I know I'll get 99.9% of what I need there
Asda ditto but cheaper and an assault on the senses
Aldi do M&S glass jar yogurts but 25p cheaper
M&S massive yellow label discounts on good quality meat and fish for the freezer
Morrisons I refuse to go in, it takes half an hour at the tills even if you're the only person queuing.
No Sainsbury's in our town but I do like their homewares ranges.

Aldi for basics. Tesco and sainsbury's for branded stuff that I couldn't get at home bargains.

Gingerkittykat · 05/12/2019 19:21

Morrisons for their meat asile which has a lot of products at a good price the other supermarkets don't stock at all.

I also like Morrisons salad bar.

Tesco for scan as you shop which keeps my interaction with human beings to a minimum.

Asda for pizza.

ssd · 05/12/2019 19:33

Most supermarkets are fine, but I hate needing a £1 coin for the trolleys. It's just a faff. Lidl and aldi are OK but you dibt get everything there. Well I don't anyway.

Basilicaofthemind · 05/12/2019 19:43

The checkouts in Waitrose are SO slow. Yes it’s nice that they’re friendly and wait for people to pack blah blah blah but I just do not want to spend that amount of time there or in any supermarket.

HermioneWeasley · 05/12/2019 19:44

I love my local Morrison’s for the knowledge of butchers and fishmongers

Only go to Asda for George

Hate the way your shopping is thrown at you in Aldi and the queues are really long

Haven’t been in a Waitrose or M&S since they decided to throw women under a bus.

BlossomingTulip · 06/12/2019 00:15

I do shop at Aldi because it is economical and fast
I love the smoked salmon and the fresh one they are cheaper aswell. The bread from Aldi is also good. I also buy the cleaning wipes, they are good. The toilet freshener (the type that you clip on the loo)is also good. I buy Nutoka which is the copy of nutella and it is surprisingly very nice and for half the price of nutella. Oh the frozen chips are nice.
I buy Cat food when I dont go to Morrison.

I like Iceland for ice creams and the frozen gateau (£2 for a huge one.....it is very tasty).Iceland bread is similar to Aldi so sometime I buy from there.

Sainsbury's is okay I buy cat milk and cat litter (the cheapest one) they are cheap and good quality.

I shop in Morrison for cat food ( cheap and best) and I like their cheddar cheese , it is very creamy. the cheese bites are also good like the one in burger king( may b better).

I occasionally buy from waitrose because I dont have any in my area. I find it very pricey but good range of fruits and cheese.

My favourite is M&S......the fresh desserts are soooo good. Actually whatever I bought from M&S never disappointed.

I like asda Tarantella brand tomatoe passata is cheap and it is very nice similar to Cirio brand. For the rest I dont prefer asda....the quality is not the best.

Tesco is good because you get to collect the coupons but the quality is not the best...it's okay!

I only buy meat from the Butchers so I cannot comment on the quality of the meat in the supermarket.

Lidl's bakery is sooo good, the croissants Halo are out of this world.

I forgot to mention that although I dont have babies I have noticed that Aldi has a good selection of organic baby food.

Walkacrossthesand · 06/12/2019 09:14

I was given a bunch of flowers at the checkout at Waitrose last week - for no reason at all. 'It's on us' the sticker said. Made my day!
