HELP! What exactly is LOL Surprise?!

Sorry for putting this in Chat but I couldn't find an appropriate topic. MNHQ please feel free to change if necessary?

My 4 almost 5yr old girl has recently become obsessed with MarioKart and Mario, so along with some Sylvanian Families which she wants, I was thinking of getting her a Nintendo Switch.... Then last night she drops the LOL Surprise bomb.

I thought I'd escaped it. Therefore I know nothing about it.

She'd like the house (how much?!?!) however I cannot find the dolls ANYWHERE? Except a big box of 14 dolls for over a hundred pounds! Am I missing something please?

Why is it all so expensive?!

Thanks

The come in balls of plastic wrapped in several more layers of plastic. No way of telling which one’s inside hence the “surprise”. You can buy in Argos I think or quite often see them near supermarket checkout. I bought one last Xmas, can’t bring myself to buy anymore although dd would love some due to the horrific overpackaging!

Caramel78 · 05/12/2019 04:31

If you go onto places likes amazon, the entertainer, and smyths you can buy the LOL dolls. They come in sphere shaped packaging and it’s a surprise which doll is inside (my niece has ended up with the same one on occasion). There are different series such as “LOL glitter series” or “LOL pet series” etc and if you got her one each from different series then she definitely wouldn’t end up with duplicates if that makes sense.
They range from about £5 each (the pet ones) to about £30 each I think.

Ohhh I see. Yikes.

Is it me or do they look creepy as hell?
I don't think they give a very good impression of how girls should dress, either. I thought Barbie was a little risqué but LOL Surprise dolls seem to be just plain chavvy! Confused

I really don't want to get her them 😩

Could you just buy her one to keep her happy. I do agree about their clothing though and was shocked how small they are.

Shesalittlemadam · 05/12/2019 06:15

@ElfByHimself She wants the £200 house! 😱

Absolutely, they are horrible, their clothes are inappropriate, they are themselves a waste of plastic packaged in an excess of plastic, but, inexplicably small girls love them. I don't understand why. They don't do anything. I don't want to buy them for my DDs. I get round my moral objections because I ask them what they would like to give each other for birthday/ Christmas and they both usually say LOL dolls, so it is not exactly me getting them.

Clangus00 · 05/12/2019 09:15

Does Santa bring her everything she wants? No. Just tell her no.
My DD is coming up on 5 and she’s never mentioned them, thankfully.

Caramel78 · 05/12/2019 09:19

My niece asked for the house too but my sister has got her the glamper van instead which is more than £100 cheaper.
She’s obsessed with the bloody things and gets so upset when she gets duplicates. Awful things!

holly40 · 05/12/2019 09:24

Don't even go there with the LOL surprise things. Awful waste of money. All the tiny accessories get lost immediately and everything is wrapped in bags and bags of plastic. Plus SO it expensive!! My DD 5 got some for her bday. Very rarely played with.

DCIRozHuntley · 05/12/2019 09:27

My girls love them and play with them every single day without fail. They're a nice size for little hands and fit in Sylvanian beds and Playmobil cars in a way that Barbie doesn't. If you don't want to get any then don't get any but I really don't understand the attitude around them on here.

If you're worried about your DD wanting to dress like a "chav" Hmm then they do LOL Boys or the Hair Goals which have more themed outfits / colourful hair, like a spooky one or a Marilyn Monroe one.

Personally I think getting your child one thing they've specifically asked for and will play with, even if it does come in a silly amount of packaging, is more eco friendly than a heap of stuff they might not even want.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 05/12/2019 09:36

They are such a rip off and the amount of packaging is ridiculous.

I'm a big hater of blind bag toys. DD likes the roblox figures and £4 each is bad enough but getting duplicates is mean. It's not the same as swapping stickers with friends.

hollyangel · 05/12/2019 10:16

My 4 nearly 5 year old asked for them too this year. But she doesn't know about the packaging, she has just played with them in her friends house.

Someone was selling off a load of them on EBay (Still not that cheap!) and I'm going to give her them in something packaged in something like this
www.hobbycraft.co.uk/pink-glitter-caddy-33cm-x-20cm-x-15cm/618287-1001

I have no problem with the dolls, small world play is great for kids. But the packaging is horrific and is tapping into a world of materialism that I want to keep her away from for as long as possible!

Whattodoabout · 05/12/2019 10:20

It’s like a big kinder egg without the chocolate. The dolls are tiny and probably cost pennies to make yet they charge over £10 for them and people pay it. The bigger LOL doll boxes that cost around £30 still only have one doll inside but it’s randomly encased in a bath bomb Confused.

Don’t even waste your money, they’re absolutely shite.

itcamefrombeckyvardyself · 05/12/2019 12:24

They are an absolute rip off.

My daughter loves them and the new OMG dolls.

It's all she's asked for for Christmas.

All her friends have them and she does play for hours with them. Dressing them up and stuff.

I have bought her the house for Christmas although I didn't really want to. However I know she will play with it for hours and be so excited when she unwraps it.

To be honest I'd rather her have that than sit on a game or iPad because at least she is using her imagination when she plays with them and I can play with them with her.

Scrumptiousbears · 05/12/2019 12:35

My DDs have got one each for Christmas £11 each from The Entertainer. One is a glitter one and the other a sparkle one. I'm also new to this so it'll be a surprise for me when they are opened Grin

formerbabe · 05/12/2019 12:37

I got my dd some once pester power she never even played with them. I threw them in the bin and she didn't even notice.
