How many non-uniform days are excessive?

DS at primary school, and is now the 4th week in row where they're having a non-uniform day. Last three have been on a Fri, but got another one tomorrow to coincide with Christmas Fair. One was raising money for Children in Need, but others have been for cash/donations for the school. I know is only £1 a time or whatever, and I realise school budgets are very very tight, but 4 weeks in a row just seems a bit much..?

That is excessive. Non uniform days are a pain in the arse and one is one too many as far as I'm concerned. I also hate World Book Day. Bah humbug.

Picklypickles · 04/12/2019 17:14

We've also had 3 in the last 3 weeks, Children in Need and then raffle prizes and then cakes for the Christmas Fair. They'll be wanting more money next week for the Christingle service, the demands seem to be neverending in December!

ColdRainAgain · 04/12/2019 17:24

I'd say 1 per term of fancydress/none uniform is about 1 a term too many, but acceptable.
More than that is stupid (and yes, weve had Children in Need, WW2 day, Andean upcoming Christmas jumped day this half term.....)

We have had 1 for Children in Need & will have had 2 for school fayre, for the infant school. School fayre ones are in exchange for donations for the fayre eg toys, bottles etc. Plus a Christmas jumper day.

The attached Junior school also has 4 days, but 2 of them are at different times, which means upset children who can't wear the same as their siblings Hmm

confusedofengland · 04/12/2019 18:32

That is this half term ie November & December only, I'm pretty sure there were others in the September & October half term.

Bluetac19 · 04/12/2019 18:44

Why are non uniform days a pain in the arse? It's just normal clothes day which children will have.

ColdRainAgain · 04/12/2019 19:19

It's the remembering, and having sufficient change in the house that is a nuisance on normal none uniform days. And yes, my kids get IOU's on their money boxes......

Taswama · 04/12/2019 19:22

At secondary, non uniform days are also an invitation to bullies. I think 1 per term is plenty there, maybe 2 per term at primary but not always for a ‘voluntary donation’.

takeittogo · 04/12/2019 19:25

Honestly, I am very suspicious of where the money ends up.

Loopytiles · 04/12/2019 19:27

More than one a term is excessive IMO!

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2019 19:28

We have one on the last Friday or every month, 50p into scho coffers BUT school do heavily subsidise trips - panto, seaside one a year etc. Also this term we did Rock Star Day for maths, Halloween, Children in Need, Roahl Dahl Day and next week is Christmas Jumper Day for STC

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/12/2019 19:28

Bluetac Often non uniform days are 'themed' which can cause stress to some children and many parents.

I think at most 1 'dress up day' per term (eg world book day) and 1 non uniform bring a donation (eg for PTA fair).

It's one of the more relaxing things about secondary school, they only have non uniform about twice a year on half days at the end of term.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2019 19:35

@Bluetac19 it's also the cost. Imagine 2 kids in primary school
Sept OOU 50p so 1.00
Rock Star Day for maths 50p fo 1.00
October OOU Toys or books for School Fsyre so say 2.00
Halloween 50p so 1.00
Children in Need 50p so 1.00
November OOU chocolates or bottles for Christmas Fsyre so say 2.00
Roahl Dahl Day 50p so 1.00
Christmas Jumper Day 20p so 40p
Dec OOU 50p so 1.00

Thats £10.40 over one term, plus £20 for the Wales trip, £6 for the expected Ice Cream and £4 for the panto.

Lots of families steuggle to find an extra £40 between New s hook uniforms And Christmas!

MerryGrinch · 04/12/2019 19:38

We've had 3 this term and it's Xmas jumper day next week. All but one of ours has been themed which is a pita of you don't have anything in the theme

IdentifyasTired · 04/12/2019 19:43

Since the start of the term I’ve forked out close to £150 for various school fundraisers, school trips and charity events. As an average that’s nearly 40 quid a month.
I have 3 dc at primary school. Luckily we can afford it without worrying but so many people must panic about requests for money, especially at this time of year.
School life is expensive.

confusedofengland · 04/12/2019 19:48

@Bluetac19 my 8-year old DS has autism & dress down days hugely stress him out & therefore me! It is not so much the change in routine, although that doesn't help. It's that he can't seem to recognise people out of the context of uniform & he gets really distracted & spaces out.

Back-to-front day caused discomfort with labels etc being in the wrong place, plus a lot of confusion: "Why do I have to wear my clothes the wrong way round?" " For charity" "What's that?" "So we can give money to poor people" "But why do we have to wear our clothes the wrong way? Why can't we just give the money to the poor people?" I have to say I couldn't fault his logic there & also wondered why Grin

RandomUsernameHere · 04/12/2019 20:00

We've got 3 own clothes/fancy dress days and 1 Christmas hat day next week, so only 1 normal uniform day out of the whole week!!!
I don't use cash ordinarily so often struggle to find the necessary £2 in cash. It's a pain, I wish the school would set up a Revolut or PayPal account or something.

RedCatTail · 04/12/2019 20:01

We had 6 Fridays in a row last half term, and this Friday will be our 3rd in a row. We've had 11 none uniform Fridays so far
