Recommendations for a power bank (for recharging iPhone)

Aridane · 04/12/2019 06:51

Went onto Amazon and there are literally thousands!

Has anyone got any recommendations?

Am looking for something portable I can take in hand luggage, that has a decent amount of power to be able to recharge iPhone more than once and that comes with inbuilt charging cable (don't want to have to carry cable separately). Not fussed about it having multiple ports, a torch or it charging devices other than an iPhone .

This one is recommended by TechRadar -
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07XJY2WFB?ascsubtag=trd-5319391331231832651-21&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 - but fuck me, it weighs 1lb (or is that not atypical)?

We have an Anker and use our usual iPhone cable with it (actually there's 2 ports on the Anker so you can charge 2 devices at same time) It's heavy and takes a while to fully charge but once charged it lasts ages. Very happy with it.

Ooh, @fedup21 - by 'wireless', you mean your phone charges wirelessly just by being in proximity with the power bank?? This opens up a whole new vista !

An iphone battery is approx 3,000mAh, so just work out how many times you need to charge it from the power bank and choose the size accordingly

Thanks, @greenlobster. I hadn't picked that up from theTehcRadar article or the Amazon reviews

Ha ha-it’s not really the wireless I’m going for (that won’t help me with my archaic iPhone 7, though DS might like it!) but it might be a useful feature for some.

I really like the idea of the inbuilt cable though.

Next question - can all power banks be taken on flights?

Are Power Banks Allowed on Planes?
In short, yes you can fly with most power banks. That’s great news if you’re in need of a quick recharge when you touch down or if you’d like to be able to do work when 40,000 feet in the air. However, like all great things there is a catch. First, power banks, which use lithium-ion batteries, need to be stored in carry-on baggage only. Second, power banks over a certain size cannot be brought onto flights at all

blog.ravpower.com/2017/04/flying-planes-power-banks/

So does that mean that the super powerful Anker ones can't actually be taken on flights?

@fedup21 - yes, I like the idea of an inbuilt retractable cable - you can't lose it / forget it

There is an iwalk charger for iPhones which plugs in without wires

Aridane · 04/12/2019 22:30

@greenlobster - the one your daughter has looks amazingly compact and good value.

I think I need one though with more capacity

Now on the wretched cable front, The Amazon description of your daughter's one says the following:

What You Get: Anker Astro E1 Portable Charger External Battery Power Bank, Micro USB Cable, travel pouch, welcome guide, our fan-favorite 18-month warranty and friendly customer service. Lightning cable for iPhone / iPad sold separately.

What on earth is a Micro USB cable as opposed to a lightning cable?

OP posts:
imnottoofussed · 04/12/2019 22:34

The micro usb cable may be to charge the actual charger if that makes sense. You cant use your apple cable to charge the charger.

Aridane · 04/12/2019 22:36

Oh - so the ones that come with an inbuilt cable aren't referring to the cable for harming your phone??

I am so confused . At this age I may have to go to a shop Shock

Tanker STOBA, though not sure how easy to get old of here. About the size of an iPhone 7. Just seems to go on and on.

fedup21 · 04/12/2019 22:43

Oh - so the ones that come with an inbuilt cable aren't referring to the cable for harming your phone??

They are. They just aren’t referring to the cable that charges the charger!

imnottoofussed · 04/12/2019 22:50

In devices that have built in wires The micro usb is for android devices, lightening is for Apple. If you have these built in this is how you charge your phone/iPad etc . You will also get a separate cable with the power bank to charge the power bank into a plug socket.

Aridane · 04/12/2019 22:52

Ah, good - thanks (and of course by 'harming' I meant 'charging' Grin )

Aridane · 04/12/2019 23:05

@fedup21

What about this one? Only £12.99 , 200g, size of a phone, LED and cables (not inbuilt)? 10,000 mAH

OP posts:
Aridane · 04/12/2019 23:23

They are all starting to look the same to me - but then I see that @SummerLove2306 and @cortex10 have the same model!!

perhapstomorrow · 04/12/2019 23:24

I have a ravpower one and it's fab. It's the 26800mAh one, so it's a little heavy compared to other models but it will recharge my phone at least 5 times. I can also connect up to 3 devices. Although it does take a while to recharge, I find that it is always ready to go because it holds so much more charge.

Aridane · 04/12/2019 23:25

The one I was referring to above was this one.

PickAChew · 04/12/2019 23:28

DS1 had an imuto one and it lost capacity fairly quickly and the LEDs stopped working properly.

Best brands to look for that are readily available are anker and ravpower. For a 9-5 day of constant use, a 10, 000mA one should adequate, so no need for anything weighing a pound.

PickAChew · 04/12/2019 23:39

Built in cables are great until the connector breaks, then the whole thing is buggered. Just get one with separate cables.

I have loads of the things, but these are my favorite 10,000mAh ones - light and fast and you can use them with a lightning cable.

Thank you all for your help.

I will get a compact one c.10,000 for the time being. And work out later about what to do for something more powerful (when I will be away for x5 days with no electricity).

I have learnt a lot from this thread - thank you everyone for posting
