If you work full time in an office and drive to work, how on earth do you get to 10k steps per day?

I've just installed an app on my phone that tracks my steps. I have to drive to work and am desk based. I get half an hour for lunch. How do you do it?

3-4 mile fast walk after work? That’s the only way I can get them in.

guiltyofa · 03/12/2019 19:10

It's about an 8 minute walk from my car to my desk. Get up every hour or so to get water/go to the bathroom/go to get a coffee. Sometimes walk at lunchtime. Am quite active once home - tidying etc. Normally make it to about 8k, 10k if I do the lunchtime walk.

AreWeAnywhereNear · 03/12/2019 19:12

I always go for a walk at lunch time & eat my lunch at my desk. If you can park further away from work so you can get in extra steps to and from the car.

Snaleandthewhail · 03/12/2019 19:12

The long way to the loos. If you can do 250 area to the toilets (maybe on another floor) and go four times a day (ok, that’s pushing it but maybe...) you can get 1000 steps. I’ve also been known to march on the spot in front of the photocopier or printer.

ScribblyGum · 03/12/2019 19:13

Get up a bit earlier, park away from work and walk. Walk in lunchtime.

IceniSky · 03/12/2019 19:15

I just cant. Leave at 0620 and really don't fancy leaving earlier. Once home its kids etc. By evening I'm just too tired. I barely get to take lunch break too. Always some meeting gets slotted in.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 03/12/2019 19:16

By either going out for a walk before work or after.

Bluesheep8 · 03/12/2019 19:18

Ok, thanks for the replies. A walk after work it is then.

I dial in to conference calls using my mobile phone and walk around (often outside if it's not raining!) whilst listening. They often last an hour so that's a good amount of steps. Of course, if I have to take notes or contribute/present I would stay at my desk!

It's difficult to get a decent amount of steps with a desk job.

foamrolling · 03/12/2019 19:21

I use the downstairs loos - put any snacks and drinks downstairs so I have to walk a bit to get them. I walk every lunchtime on my 30 minute break - rain or shine. I have waterproofs and wellies in my car! That sees off 5k, a few more on the school run/doing housework and then I can do a 30 minute walk to do the rest

TonOfLead · 03/12/2019 19:22

Walk to more distant loos.
Go to speak to colleagues face-to-face rather than emailing/phoning/messaging.
Parking at the far end of the carpark.
Walking meetings (if possible)
Walking on the spot whilst watching TV in the evening

But some days are hard to get to 10k

BillywilliamV · 03/12/2019 19:24

Photocopier is other end of building, though there is one closer.
Also walk after work if required, but my kids are teenagers so can be left alone

thewinkingprawn · 03/12/2019 19:24

I never ever managed it when I worked in an office. 10,000 steps is a lot more than you think. I know predominantly work from home and got a dog. It takes 5 miles a day roughly to do 10k steps which is what I do but it’s a chunk out of the day and no way could I have done it office based.

user1497207191 · 03/12/2019 19:24

Get a treadmill at home then have an evening walk/jog.

pinkpeoniesplease · 03/12/2019 19:24

I work in a building with three floors and when I need the loo or to get something from another office I zig zag up and down the corridors to get a few more steps in.
At lunch I walk over to the supermarket nearby to get lunch or a few bits for home and walk up and down the aisles. After work I walk the dog.
It feels like a full time job some days though!

SouthernComforts · 03/12/2019 19:25

I don't. I drive from work to collect dd, drive home, cook tea, eat, clean up, do homework, do my own uni work, fall asleep about 11pm. Repeat x 5. I hit it easily at weekends though.

fromthefloorboardsup · 03/12/2019 19:26

I only ever manage by going for a walk after work. Otherwise sometimes I only get about 1000 steps

Runningonempty84 · 03/12/2019 19:26

Runs at lunchtime. On the days I only get a 30 min lunch, I tend to do a hard 3 miles and then a quick shower.

Hermie12 · 03/12/2019 19:27

A countryside based office. Colleague brings dog to work . We walk every lunchtime otherwise my step count would be shocking!

pinkpeoniesplease · 03/12/2019 19:27

Today I ran 5k before work, walked into town at work then walked the dog this evening and I'm on almost 17000 which is by far the most I've ever done! On days I run 5k 10,000 is easily doable.

captainprincess · 03/12/2019 19:29

I work in an office full time and always do 4-5 miles a day. It is a bit of a challenge but I make myself.
20-25 minute walk before work. 20 minute walk at lunch (though I do get an hour)
Then 40 minute walk after work. With the walking around the office this usually adds up ok.
I do have a dog that joins me on 2 of the walks though, this makes it easier as I need to walk him Grin

lljkk · 03/12/2019 19:32

I don't know yet somehow I do 10k+ steps on any day I drive. We eat at our desks so lunch is a dash to supermarket (20 minutes walk).

Our default parking lot is 10 min. walk away (20 minutes RT), but I can park for free 5 minutes away further than that (+10 minutes).

So that's 50 minutes without doing anything specific to get steps.

Cohle · 03/12/2019 19:34

I go for a run/to the gym about three days a week and otherwise I try and do something fairly active with the kids (park etc, or stroll with other parents whilst kids are at a class). I also park further away and try and take the stairs.

Longdistance · 03/12/2019 19:35

I work in a school office. The buildings are spread apart throughout the grounds of the school. Minimal communications only found in the 18th century, I have to walk to pass on messages. Sometimes I have to run across the massive games field in mud to get a message/retrieve a child.

MrsWombat · 03/12/2019 19:36

By doing a Leslie Sansone YouTube video. It's much easier to be active in the summer months though so don't beat yourself up too badly.
