Very skinny. Suffering terribly with the cold. Any one in same boat?

I actually fear winter because I know that it represents 4 months of me feeling almost constantly bone cold

I know it is because I’m “skin and bone” in the word of my lovely sister! But seeing as this is who I am am and have been all my life, I have to be realistic... not going to change!

But the side effect being extreme vulnerability to the cold is debilitating. I have tried everything over the years but to no avail.

Tell me that others are here too! The only thing that helps is hot yoga but the effect wears off within an hour.

It’s getting a bit depressing...

No, I'm fat. Grin

I still get very cold though!

I'm not super skinny but I feel the cold intensely. Then again I have low blood pressure and poor circulation so mostly I feel it in the extremities! Which is probably why I've chosen to live half way up Norway... yeah.. whoops!

decent thermals made of actual wool help a ton, layer up like crazy! I can often be wearing five layers at a time (doesn't get that bulky with high quality wool clothing). The best socks I've ever come across are Kari Traa, wow so warm! But M&S (and weirdly now also Tesco) do a pretty decent thermal sock range. I also put special insoles in my boots that are foil underneath and wool on top to keep me toastier, my winter boots are quite hardcore, leather up to mid calf lined with wool. I'd also recommend a double knit alpacca scarf, the warmth is amazing! Plus fingerless gloves at work and a decent hat. I'm always colder if I don't have a hat.

I'm also small and am always cold, so I get it. Here's what to do:

  • Buy some thermals (I got mine on the cheap in a ski section and they're more than good enough for me)
  • Multiple pairs of socks, or one good-quality pair (hiking socks are great and very warm)
  • Wear tights underneath your jeans. If wearing a skirt, wear 2-3 pairs of tights depending on thickness. (I recently bought some cotton ones and they're much warmer)
  • Always wear a hat. I've got a few really nice beanies that I can wear all day/evening (I'm in my 20s and work for a very small company, so I don't have a "uniform")
  • Gloves and scarves are your friend.
  • Drink a lot of tea throughout the day. (Thermoses are ideal for this)
  • As soon as I get home, I put another pair of thermals on underneath my pyjamas/comfy clothes and if needed, I'll add a jumper or my dressing gown. (It does the trick and I'll usually get quite warm by the end of the evening and will need to take a layer off).
  • Exercise! I've found that if I do some exercise first thing in the morning, (even 10 mins) I don't feel the cold as much during the day. If you don't want to/can't/don't have time, then even something as small as jumping up and down while waiting for the kettle to boil, doing a few jumping jacks every time you go to the loo etc help a lot!
  • For a step further, get a couple of small hot water bottles that you can keep at work and at home and fill up religiously, this is what makes the biggest difference for me when I'm really cold. If you've got a commute home, you can fill it up right before leaving the office and stick it under your clothes/tucked into your waistband with your coat on top and you'll be toasty all the way home!

Good luck, I know it sucks but at least you now have a good excuse to drink hot chocolate all day.

Thank you all

I’m in three layers
Under a heated blanket and then a blanket over that
Heating on
And still cold!

Improving though

Thanks again.
Skinny plus under active thyroid (unusual combo) = bloody freezing

You have my sympathies! Really excellent advice and tips from Damntheman and Blackbird1235 and it sounds like you do some of them already (I’m adding a few to my routine, thank you!)
I am not skinny but small in height and my coldness get worse depending where I am in my cycle. I have found wrist warmers (recycled cashmere from turtle doves) amazing for keeping my hands warmer throughout the day and a neck warmer like a buff (not bulky but helps keep the draught out of my neck). Acai thermal skinny trousers or thermal long johns underneath trousers (I hate tights underneath my trousers) and always wearing a vest and tucking it in (Tesco do sleeveless thermal vest) and my Celtic and co sheepskin house boots.

Do you move enough? I'm getting cold now because I've been on MN too long. Need to get out and about to warm myself up.
