Oral thrush from inhalers, how to treat?

I've had to up my steroid inhalers due to this rotten virus that's doing the rounds. And now to add to my misery I have oral thrush. Anyone know of ways to treat it? The pharmacy is at the top of a hill and there is no way I can push the double buggy up their with my chest being so unpredictable atm.

Oh, and I use a spacer already.

I have an oral gel, I think its called daktarin or something close. Orange flavour, use a finger tip worth twice a day and it works in a day or two.

Best advice is to rinse with warmish water immediately after steroid inhaler, and gargle with it too, before spitting it all out. Warm is just easier to hold in your mouth for longer, that's the only reason I've said warmish..

Could you get a taxi to the pharmacy? Do you rinse your mouth after using the inhaler?

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 02/12/2019 12:54

Thanks @Gertrudesgarden, should have said I'm bf, any idea if it's okay to use?

Will defo rinse after use now, I had thrush years a go but completely forgot about it. I was fortunate enough to go through a good few years of good asthma health then this year I'm back on all the drugs.

@dementedpixie, not easily unfortunately, I have two dc in tow and no car seats as dh has the car for work.

I can get into town hopefully tomorrow which has a small pharmacy. I was wondering if there were any home remedies that people could recommend which I could start before then. Just fed up of feeling miserable and this is tipping me over the edge Sad

I would think so as you can use thrush treatments in babies too

dementedpixie · 02/12/2019 13:01

I've seen a couple of sites saying to rinse mouth with a salt solution or a solution of bicarbonate of soda

geekaMaxima · 02/12/2019 13:29

YY to gargling and rinsing out mouth with water after use. My GP strongly advised it when I was first prescribed a steroid inhaler and warned oral thrush was very likely if I didn't do it.

I follow it up with brushing my teeth, as it works out with my twice-a-day use. No thrush after years of inhaler use, thankfully.

Gertrudesgarden · 02/12/2019 13:34

Can a pal do a pharmacy run for you?

Gertrudesgarden · 02/12/2019 13:37

The daktarin oral gel is safe for kids over 4 months, but as its not going anywhere but your mouth, I'd imagine it'd be fine if your bf baby is younger.

Gertrudesgarden · 02/12/2019 13:38

Oops its used four times a day, not twice.

deplorabelle · 02/12/2019 13:46

You can also use corsodyl mouthwash which you could probably get on an online shopping order.

Corsodyl is foul though - can stain teeth and also makes your tongue feel like it's burning. Daktarin gel is much nicer to use

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 02/12/2019 14:28

Thanks all, I'll give the salt water and Coraodyl a go today.

I'll definitely be sure to rinse after taking them now. Stupid question but is it for all inhalers or just steroids?

Unfortunately no one to do a pharmacy run, we're still rather new here and I wouldn't feel comfortable asking anyone unless it was an emergency. I'll get to the shops tomorrow and get some gel.

Think it's mainly for steroid ones

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/12/2019 15:25

I think it might be all inhalers and it’s certainly on the leaflet of my Fostair inhaler.

dementedpixie · 02/12/2019 15:30

Forstair contains a corticosteroid so yes, you should rinse after using it

dementedpixie · 02/12/2019 15:31

Sorry, fostair
