Suggestions for a 23 year old woman who rarely reads

Dd seldom reads but I would like to get her a book....none of the authors I read would interest her. She used to read angst type books about troubled teenagers.

The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime
Jonathan Livingston seagull
The girl with the pearl earring

Nothing too taxing or long there plus what about non fiction, does she have any interests at all?

666onmyhead · 02/12/2019 08:54

Why push your hobby onto her ? Buy her what she actually might like?

AuntieMarys · 02/12/2019 10:54

I have bought her lots of things she likes 666. I buy her a book every Xmas of some description...her passions are musical theatre and cats.
" pushing your hobby" is a bit of a strange response.

ms I know she's read The curious dog as she loved it at the theatre.

Try non fiction. What about 'there is no planet B'

GBroGal · 02/12/2019 10:59

If reading isn't her thing, but you'd like to share with her some of your favourites, what about an audio book that she can listen to in the car or out walking/running (or whatever she does)?

Ditsythespider · 02/12/2019 11:04

If reading isn’t her thing I wouldn’t buy her anything. I love reading my sister doesn’t.
I tried to get her into reading and she told me she hated reading.
She then said to me what do you hate doing that I love doing so I said running (she’s a regular half marathon runner)
So she said buying her a book for Christmas was the equivalent to her buying me a running membership at her running club.
One persons passion is another persons chore.
I’d get her something else if I were you.

bintang · 02/12/2019 11:05

passions are musical theatre and cats.

A book about staging the musical Cats? Grin

But I too think don't buy books for non-readers. I say that as a bookaholic!

romeoonthebalcony · 02/12/2019 11:06

Cats and Musical theatre? Does she have the original Eliot poems? Maybe she'd appreciate a lovely copy of that - Old possums book of practical cats

AuntieMarys · 02/12/2019 11:13

It's not that she dislikes it...just seldom does due to time. But she has more time next year ( train journeys)
Cats musical is an idea...I know she loves it

OP, it was not a strange response to say that you're pushing your hobby on her, because you are. She doesn't like to read, so why would you buy her a book every year?

I can understand why you might try and encourage a child to read, but she's 23 for goodness sake, let her make her mind up about what she likes, and respect her decisions not to read.

PurpleFrames · 02/12/2019 11:26

What about poetry? Maybe rupi kaur?

AuntieMarys · 02/12/2019 11:28

Where did I say she doesn't like to read? I said she seldom reads.

I like Chick Lit. Usually light hearted easy to read. Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series is fun. Ali McNama is not bad. Lindsey Kelk, Sarah Morgan, Carole Matthews - authors like that.

AuntieMarys · 02/12/2019 11:44

bookmum Sophie Kinsella looks good. Thank you!!!

What about The Rosie Project - Graeme Simsion. My DD is 22 and reads sporadically - we often swap books and this was one we both liked - very light reading.

bruffin · 02/12/2019 11:55

The novel of Dear Evan Hansen by Steven Levensen
There is musical based on it just opened in London.Very teenage angsty.

CantstandmLMs · 02/12/2019 14:30

Eleanor Opliphant is completely fine is one I think most people would enjoy!

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 02/12/2019 14:35

Ask? It’s hardly a surprise if she gets a book every year so ask if there’s any she’d like

Leeds2 · 02/12/2019 15:01

Bridget Jones.

fussychica · 02/12/2019 16:57

Eleanor Oliphant came to my mind too or you could try My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite which is excellent, quite short and very different. Check it out.
DS is a big fan of Audible as he is so busy he can now listen in the car or even in the shower! He has got through lots of "books" since he started subscribing. Perhaps your DD would prefer that to a physical book.

BetterABird · 03/12/2019 00:26

It's a bit like asking which chocolate to get someone who hates chocolate, or what socks to buy someone who only wears sandals.

She may be commuting but may prefer to send work emails or listen to podcasts. Why not ask her?
