Ear plug recommendations- the thread you were waiting for.

Sorry this is so dull. Smile

I've bought two different lots of ear plugs recently. I chose them as they were highly rated but neither seem to work.

Am I doing something wrong?

I need to wear them for sleep if anyone has any recommendations.

I've been using foam pink and yellows for years.

I tried the harder type but they hurt after a bit.

Luscinia · 01/12/2019 00:11

Boots wax ones for me too. The only ones that actually stay in my ear.

MountainDweller · 01/12/2019 00:14

I like silicone ones too. They work and are the least irritating to my ears. Still get sweat rash in them though (TMI?Grin)

I don't know if you've heard this

Roll them between finger and thumb to squash down for insertion, they will slowly expand

Put your other arm over your head and pull your ear up before poking the plug in.

Some people moisten them, but saliva is unhygienic

AFAIK modern ones are usually plastic foam but with a smooth surface

If you have waxy ears I think eardrops will keep them clean. Apparently plugs can push it deeper inside.

If you go to a bike show or a power station you can get assorted free samples. Some bike shops sell a mixed selection pack so you can see what suits you.

Macks Dreamgirl. Brilliant.

Use your opposite hand to pull your ear gently out then push them in. Love em

Silicone silicone silicone! I've been using earplugs for two bloody decades (heard my parents having sex as a teen and promptly invested in earplugs - am now completely unable to sleep without the bloody things) and I've tried every type. None are as good as silicone. Bioears are the best but Boots own are a very close and more affordable second.

Thank you everyone,

Bioears are the best for my small ears. Stay in place and cut out the snoring from DH.

ReturnofSaturn · 01/12/2019 14:34

I've used earplugs every night for years.

Definitely the silicone ones!!

glitteringfishy · 01/12/2019 14:55

Quies wax ones are the best! Can’t sleep without them.

Crikeycrikeyblimeymoses · 01/12/2019 16:48

I second getting a variety pack, I did and found my perfect type. It'll save you money in the long run. There's no point asking what other people like as everyone has a slightly differently shaped ear canal...

mrsbyers · 01/12/2019 16:59

Another Moldex Spark user here , I buy them 200 at a time from eBay

Thecazelets · 01/12/2019 17:02

Boots own brand wax ones for me have been life changing, as DH is a champion snorer. Foam ones really irritated my ears after a while, and I have to wear them every night or decamp to the spare room.

Ketomeato · 01/12/2019 17:11

Boots wax Muffles for me. I’ve tried so many brands and these are the only ones that block everything.

In times of urgency and emergency I have substituted with blu-tack (effective but a bit hard) and the red bit of Babybel cheese (acceptable but leaves a red stain and cheesy niff.)

wheeltrims · 01/12/2019 17:13

Another vote for Boots was ones, they completely mould to the shape of your ear to block everything out sound wise. After wearing all kinds of ear plugs for years these are the only ones that are actually effective for me.

tobee · 01/12/2019 17:14

Thanks again

*wax not was!

SlaughteredChicken · 01/12/2019 18:57

Just a quick reminder to be careful when using silicone that you dont get them.into the ear canal. If they break, they stick to the skin and A&E don't have the tools to remove them so you have to wait for an ENT appointment (may be speaking from experience Blush )

CMOTDibbler · 01/12/2019 19:02

Macks Silicone ear plugs are fab. I have small ear canals and can't get ear plugs in them, but as silicone ones don't go up the canal they work brilliantly for me, reduce sound massively and are very comfortable

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 01/12/2019 19:27

Howard Leight yellow and pink ones. Best EVER. I buy them in bulk. No others even come close. They expand satisfyingly in the ear and you can hear everything getting quieter as they do!
