Scared to quit understaffed job!!

Currently working in an understaffed job and have found a better fit but I’m going to leave my colleagues with a lot of shifts to cover when I leave and I’m feeling guilty and might just miss my opportunity if I don’t resign soon! How do I muster the courage to go??

Write out the letter of resignation, give the appropriate notice and leave after working it.

TravellingSpoon · 30/11/2019 22:17

I have been where you are and its horrid but you have to do whats right for you.

Try and give them as much notice as you can so they have the best possible chance if covering the shifts.

Summertrees · 30/11/2019 22:20

This is not your responsibility. Just go. The chances are some of your colleagues will feel inspired by what you've done and will find new jobs themselves.

GreenTulips · 30/11/2019 22:23

If your colleagues got an opportunity, do you think they’d look back? They have the same choice you do.

I understand where you're coming from, but if you delay leaving proactively then you risk staying to the point of burnout and then crashing out.

I was in your situation a couple of months ago.
I wrote out my notice, handed it to my boss. Two weeks later I started my new job.

I was feeling the same as you. Now I'm back to my old self, less moody, less snappy and much much happier. The guilt lasted less than a week.

Have you been working there long? In my experience I told my manager I was offered a new job, that I had accepted it and that my notice would follow- it allowed recruitment to start before I even began my notice ( mine was 1 month notice) how long notice do you have to work?

Cockadoodledooo · 30/11/2019 22:44

Slightly different situation, but I had to cut my hours due to health issues. Knew it would negatively impact colleagues, but was best for me. Had to basically talk myself in to not having a conscience. Hard, but necessary.

They are colleagues, not friends and the problem and responsibility is management's - not yours. Just had in your notice and let management worry about it and good luck for the future!

safariboot · 01/12/2019 02:09

If your employer doesn't hire your replacement during your notice period, that's their fault not yours.

Nojustyou · 01/12/2019 02:31

Just work your notice, and don't think twice about it.

Your employer could decide to get rid of you next week! You would have missed your better opportunity and end up with nothing.

Even if you walk out now (which you shouldn't), your employer can employ temps immediately to help cover. It's not your responsibility at all. Your colleagues might be applying for other jobs right now anyway.

Managers problem, not yours.
Resign and walk out of there with your head held high.
