9 week old was under smoke alarm when it went off!

Please call me down!
My 9 week old was asleep in the hallway whilst I was cooking steak.

The smoke alarm went off so I came out of the kitchen but by the time I got there it had stopped. Then I went up my step ladder in the kitchen to check if the window could open wider when it went off again. I got down and went to her puschair, opened the door and pushed her out of the flat when it went off.

I have bad hearing so already have passed on not great hearing genes. Please tell me I haven't damaged her hearing Sad

You have not damaged her hearing. Really.

DeadDoorpost · 30/11/2019 18:16

Happened with DD this week, aged 10 weeks. She's fine.

I'm sure your DD is fine too, but it's totally understandable to be concerned as it is such a loud, piercing noise.

She will be totally fine - there is literally no guidance on keeping babies away from smoke alarms because of a health risk

First baby?

It's unlikely it'll have damaged her hearing. In fact I'm sure I saw a study that kids don't hear smoke alarms when asleep. I don't know where though.

JanewaysBun · 30/11/2019 18:19

Thanks dead it feel a like it was going for hours but I know it was probably very quick.

Glad your DD is ok x

Yep kids don't hear smoke alarms, was on Watchdog. It's too high pitch for them. You can buy specific alarms for kids I think or ones that speak instead

JanewaysBun · 30/11/2019 18:21

Thanks ashave

gamer no She s my second lol but my DS is being investigated for poor hearing (my entire family have slight hearing loss) so I'm a bit sensitive of anything that makes their hearing worse.

It's understandable OP, but I think in this instance everything is fine.

Cheers popcorn I knew I'd heard something somewhere. Grin

popcorndiva · 30/11/2019 19:56

Yep they had a long segment on it as there was calls for it to be clearly labelled on packaging which it is not at present and therefore not widely known..

If parents knew they would make a different escape plan

Huh? Children hear higher frequencies than adults, so how does this work?

GinLimeandLemonade · 30/11/2019 20:10

Children do hear smoke alarms, it's just that when they're asleep they're much less likely to wake up than adults. I assume it's to do with how deep they sleep, rather than their ears physically hearing the alarm.

JoGoes · 30/11/2019 20:12

You won’t have hurt her or damaged her hearing, don’t worry

gamerchick · 30/11/2019 20:18

Those mosquito things that only the young can hear, that are put around shops to stop them hanging around? Aren't they a higher frequency?

Teachermaths · 30/11/2019 20:20

OP chill!! He'll be fine.

SarahAndQuack · 30/11/2019 20:22

Oh, that makes sense gin.

AutumnGlitterBall · 30/11/2019 20:23

DH regularly sets ours off with steam from the shower in the winter. The three year old can still hear a sweetie wrapper rustling at fifty paces.

BertieBotts · 30/11/2019 20:26

They don't literally not hear the sound :o It just doesn't wake them up - which I was confused about being news, has nobody else ever burnt toast with their DC sleeping in the house?

Don't worry OP I expect she found it frightening and uncomfortable but any effects will have been completely temporary. You could always ask the HV next time you take her to clinic, but I'm sure they will say it's fine.

SarahAndQuack · 30/11/2019 20:37

Grin YY to the burning of toast.

I can't believe I took that so literally about the pitch. Duh!

But yes, OP, I am sure she will be fine.
