48 Hours for Norovirus??

Last Friday I had what I think was Norovirus. At least the symptoms were classic textbook of it.

General information seems to feel that recovery is 48 hours. Is this a bit optimistic? I have felt rough all week with some aching and a dodgy delicate stomach. Certainly I have been off my food.

When they say recovery, I think that it doesn't necessarily mean you can expect to feel 100% at that point, more that the d&v should have finished within that timeframe. You can still be totally wiped out physically and a bit delicate stomach/bowel wise (it's been through the wringer after all!).

48 hrs after your last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea is when you are considered not to be infectious anymore is my understanding.

Trooperslaneagain · 29/11/2019 22:12

I've had two back to back. Lost a stone in 4 weeks and believe me (not a stealth boast) I seriously didn't have it to lose.

Still not properly on my feet. Generally v healthy and well but I'm floored.

its not recovery time its 48hrs after last vomit or loose stool that you are considered non infectious.

I’ve been really off my food since it happened. Or only interested in boring plain foods.

The other thing is how I was shocked at how sudden it came on. One moment fine, next moment glued to the bathroom.

I was off work for 2 weeks last year with Norovirus, diagnosed in hospital when we thought I had a possible case of gallstones as the pain was so bad.

I only had d&v for 3/4 days then the stomach pains and generally feeling shit floored me.

Take it easy and don't rush it.

WhenYouCantRunYouCrawl · 29/11/2019 22:20

I had it two weeks ago and I'd say that it's only in the last 3 or 4 days that I've really had my appetite back. It really knocked the wind out of my sails.

Maryann1975 · 29/11/2019 22:20

I didn’t think it was 48hours recovery time, but like others have said, it’s 48 hours from the last bought of sickness or diarrhoea when you can resume your normal activities (ie going to school or work).

Inthemoment38 · 29/11/2019 22:21

I started with it on Sunday and still queasy and fatigued now. Lots of schools round my region are closed because of it. Nasty 🤢

AllStarBySmashMouth · 29/11/2019 22:24

It can vary from person to person. The last bout I had was almost 24 hours to the minute. Then after that I was right as rain and carrying on with my day. Came on quickly, was like hell on Earth for 24 hours, then disappeared suddenly and I was fine.

But years ago, I had it and I was ill for two weeks. The v&d symptoms stopped after a day or two, but the horrible feeling and inability to eat lasted a fortnight and I dropped two stone in weight.

It's a fickle thing.

flatpack1 · 29/11/2019 22:53

It is nasty but perfectly engineered as AllStar says. I was the same 24 hours bang on. 12 hours V and 12 hours D. I was almost impressed Grin

FloorLamp · 29/11/2019 23:02

I had this last Sunday, I'm still recovering the now. S&V finished on the Tuesday but as previously said I still feel queasy and tired. Only really got my appetite back yesterday.

Came out of nowhere too, horrible!

Crunchymum · 29/11/2019 23:06

I think the sudden onset is one of the main signs it is noro (as opposed to a general tummy bug)

Get well soon

treedragon · 30/11/2019 14:47

@FloorLamp

This is it. One moment fine. Next mess all over.

Sudden onset is very noro-typical. Also getting suddenly better.
48 hrs is an average. So some people feel normal after 12 hrs and there is a long tail of people who take longer afterwards. Especially immuno compromised people may struggle to get over it.
