Scam email: Your personal data has been threatened... Help!

I saw a scam email in my junk mail folder. It read, Be sure to read this message. Your personal data has been threatened'.
I did not open it but a quick search showed it is a threat to expose a split-screen video of me masturbating/ pornography site material I was doing this to, to my contacts if I don't sent Bitcoin.
This is not a concern as I do not visit such sites.
As a precaution though - in case my PC has been compromised or corrupted - I ran a Windows Offline Scan (not ever done this before) as this apparently is able to pick up more threats.
MY concern is that when the computer rebooted and I put in my usual password in to get into my system, there was a notification (where I get usual Microsoft messages informing of updates etc, so legit, I would think) that said my Microsoft password had recently been changed. I didn't change anything! I can also look into my hotmail email account with my usual so I am wondering what on earth is going on...
I have no idea if my PC has been hacked and if I can use it with peace of mind to make purchases etc. I am not well and could do without this. I would really appreciate any help or advice. I saw sites with instructions (beyond my technical capabilities) about removing this ransomware/ spyware but don't know if these are a scam in themselves. The PC now seems to be running more slowly.
Would appreciate any help! Thanks.

Is there anyone who uses your computer who might be susceptible to this type of blackmail?

littlecabbage · 28/11/2019 21:06

Sorry, I have no idea, but bumping this for you. Hopefully a computer buff will be along shortly.

Mrsmadevans · 28/11/2019 21:07

I have these every week or so , just put them in the bin OP .

QuietlyFuming · 28/11/2019 21:08

So weird, OP - I have literally just got the same email! I had a minor panic when I opened it but have done some googling and came across this article in the Guardian:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2019/jan/17/phishing-email-blackmail-sextortion-webcam

(Hope that link works). Looks like it’s a spam email and there’s nothing to worry about.

Bettyhatesavocados · 28/11/2019 21:19

BillywilliamV No, not at all.

littecabbage Thanks.

Mrsmadevans I wasn't so bothered as I know I've not visited porn sites, but it's the change of password notification - when I've not changed any passwords - that has unsettled me. So, I'n not worried about extortion but I am worried the system has been hacked and is vulnerable. I have to make purchases and use online banking...

QuietlyFuming Thanks for the link. It did go straight to my junk folder. I just ran a scan on the PC as a precaution. I was not concerned really until I got a notification (on the screen where legitimate Microsoft messages come up). Like I said, they have no videos of me or such sites as I don't visit them but the notification from Microsoft that I have changed a password is more than a little disconcerting. The message appeared after I did a never-tried-before-offline-scan (I chose to do because it apparently picks viruses etc up more than an online scan is likely to do) and the PC rebooted. I put in my password to get into the PC (all good) but then this Microsoft alert for a password change came up. It's more than a little disconcerting.
I hate bastards who prey on the vulnerable!

QuietlyFuming Did you click on the have I been pwned link in that article. I did and it says my data had been breached, 1 site, no pastes. I don't know whether to change my passwords now, and if I do, if I'm safe to do it on this computer! Ugh!

I see what you mean about the password change, that does seem a bit odd. I’m hoping someone more computer literate than me comes along and can shed some light on that for you.

I get these all the time, I just delete and block.

Bettyhatesavocados · 28/11/2019 21:31

Thanks QuietlyFuming That's what I'm worried about.
I don't know if you checked out your email on haveibeenpwned.com. I did and there had been a breach. Apparently, they can send you stuff long after a breach / harvest your data long after.
Did you open the dodgy email. It said on that link you sent me not to.
Thanks for helping.
