Concerns about lamb at Christmas?

No-one likes Turkey and for the past few years I've done organic chicken and guinea fowl but want a change. What would you think of slow roast leg of lamb cooked with sloe gin, with plenty of garlic and rosemary etc? Hopefully it would be sticky on the outside and fall way from the bone.

(I'm aware it would have to be NZ lamb at that time of year and therefore a bit of a carbon footprint but as we are veggies 5 days out of 7 I think we can justify a festive treat.)

So environmental concerns aside, I like the sound of it but not sure if it's too unChristmassy or if it could be served with Christmassy trimmings like pigs in blankets?? Opinions please :-)

Eat what you want, there is no law to say you must eat turkey, if no one likes it then it would be silly to make it.

CatUnderTheStairs · 28/11/2019 16:23

I'd love that. Be great with roasties or dauphonnaise. Red cabbage, sprouts etc.

I think pigs in blanket go with anything so I think I'm the wrong person to reply on that one.

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 28/11/2019 16:25

There is no rule that you have to have turkey. My DM hates turkey so sometimes has beef, sometimes pork, whatever takes her fancy. This year I'm going to buy a small turkey and have a leg of lamb so that people have a choice. I like the idea of cooking it in sloe gin or something, so might try that.

We are not turkey lovers in our house either and have lamb every year - along with all the usual festive trimmings AND including yorkshire puddings. I think you should eat whatever you like on Christmas, no point eating stuff you don't like is there Grin

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 28/11/2019 16:26

Oh, and as someone that will eat a Yorkshire pudding with any meat, not just beef, I'd say have all your traditional trimmings if that's what you like. I certainly will be. My husband wouldn't forgive me if there were no pigs in blankets!

AgeLikeWine · 28/11/2019 16:26

Sounds great, and so much nicer than turkey.

OctopusNow · 28/11/2019 16:29

Sounds lovely! We never bother with turkey, usually have game or something but it's whatever we fancy as a treat.

Do what makes you happy Smile

Strokethefurrywall · 28/11/2019 16:29

I don't do turkey, I either do prime rib or lamb but lamb is a novelty as we have to have it shipped in from overseas.

Regardless, I serve pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings and stuffing no matter what meat I serve.

This year we have friends joining us so I'm going to get a ready cooked and carved turkey and will do the standard trimmings plus Yorkshires. I can take or leave turkey and if it was just us I'd probably get a chicken for DH and the kids but lovely to have friends over.

00deed1988 · 28/11/2019 16:30

We always have lamb. It is our favourite meat so may as well have a treat at Christmas!

LER83 · 28/11/2019 16:32

Never really do turkey, this year we are having beef, think did chicken last year! Just make what you like!

VenusClapTrap · 28/11/2019 16:33

Yum. Can I come?

Moominfan · 28/11/2019 16:34

Sounds amazing op!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/11/2019 16:36

All the family of obe of my best friends either actively dislike or aren't fussed about turkey.

They have a full-on forerib of beef roast instead...

DressRehearsal11 · 28/11/2019 16:36

If you know everyone who’s going to be eating and that they’re not turkey die-heads, lamb is great. If you want to avoid the carbon footprint of NZ lamb, go for mutton - I find it even tastier than lamb and it slow cooks really well. Good butchers will be able to source it from a UK farm.

Montybojangles · 28/11/2019 16:40

Sounds good. We aren’t fussed about turkey, so often have goose, much tastier.

AdaColeman · 28/11/2019 16:44

Sounds delicious! Ocado have a range of West Country lamb ATM, so your carbon footprint depends on where you shop! Wine [wine[

iklboo · 28/11/2019 16:50

We go out for a curry. Eat what you fancy and enjoy it! Smile

Nottobesoldseparately · 28/11/2019 16:52

We have never had turkey. It was always beef growing up.

Personally I'd hate lamb as I can't stand it, so I'd be disappointed if was coming to yours but I'd just eat all the veg.

I also can't stand pigs in blankets, much nicer to do separate rolls of bacon and mini sausages!

Livebythecoast · 28/11/2019 16:54

We never had turkey growing up. Beef or duck usually as nobody liked turkey. We're going out Christmas day for lunch. DH is having lamb, DD and I are having fillet steak Grin. I'll do a roast over Christmas but it won't be Turkey.
Have what you want - the tree, decorations, crackers, music etc make it christmassy not the meat you're eating! Enjoy

PurpleCrazyHorse · 28/11/2019 17:33

We do lamb in the slow cooker and it's delicious. Any fat just melts away (which is why I'd previously hated eating lamb).

We rarely have turkey as it's just 2 adults and 2 kids, so I tend to get a chicken instead. We also slow cook it as it frees up the oven for all the other bits.

tattychicken · 28/11/2019 17:35

You could get a lovely leg of lamb from a butcher at the moment and freeze it? No need to use NZ lamb.

BarbedBloom · 28/11/2019 17:36

Sounds lovely. We are having venison this year as we like to change it up as well. Was duck last year.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/11/2019 17:36

Have whatever you want.
I am going to be annoying though and say you aren't veggie 5 days a week, you are omnivores, as am I.

leckford · 28/11/2019 17:37

Go to a proper butcher and get U.K. lamb

Elbeagle · 28/11/2019 17:37

Eat what you want!
We usually have rib of beef or venison on Christmas Day. Lamb on Boxing Day. Not of us are bothered about turkey so we don’t have it.
