Which port for with cheese?

Hello everyone,

I am a philastine and don't know anything about Port, but I am giving my sister and BIL a cheese board and cheese hamper for christmas and know that they like Port so thought maybe a bottle would be a nice addition to the hamper.

The question i have is, how many different types (not brands) are there of port? do they all go well with eating cheese? I am aware of 'normal' port and also ruby port. how do these differ?

Any recommendations for specific ports are welcome but I only have a very small budget so no high price specialty ports please.

I like a tawny port, a bit more mellow than some others and any of the well known makes, Cockburns , Taylors etc. shouldn't be too expensive. I'm sure it will be appreciated, whatever you get.

Thank you. I've been doing some research and had come to the conclusion that Tawny port might be the best option.

I found a Croft's reserve 10 year tawny port for a very reasonable price so I think that will go in the hamper.

Ha, we much prefer ruby!
The M&S one is in a nice bottle and is often reduced, will look for a link

Grumpbum123 · 28/11/2019 18:43

The M&S one is a good general port

soupforbrains · 28/11/2019 18:49

@Chewbecca oh yes a link would be good.

I didn't know that Tawny port existed before today I know my sister prefers ruby over white. But I have no idea about tawny.

The M&S ones are lovely.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/11/2019 18:54

any port in a storm...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/11/2019 18:55

I enjoy Warre’s. Someone gave me a lovely vintage bottle a few years back and it was like nectar.

HunnyMummy1993 · 28/11/2019 18:56

Calais

Then you can drive into France and buy a LOT of cheese.

fannyanney · 28/11/2019 18:57

Another vote for M&S port

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/11/2019 18:58

Yes. But that’s M&S though isn’t it? Don’t give your money to them! Go Warre’s (toy won’t regret it).

MoaningMinniee · 28/11/2019 18:58

We're port fans... and tbh there are no truly atrocious ones out there, it's not like cheap table wine which can be awful.

OrlandoInTheWilderness · 28/11/2019 18:58

I like Cockburns with cheese.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/11/2019 19:00

There’s an awfully good dirty joke in there but it’s before 9pm...

Chewbecca · 28/11/2019 19:14

The M&S one isn’t showing on their website. I don’t know if it is in store or not, has been last few years. I think it is usually £8 and in a short, squat bottle.

homemadecommunistrussia · 28/11/2019 19:33

The m&s one is delicious, but I haven't had it with cheese.

loutypips · 28/11/2019 19:35

Ruby is much nicer with cheese.
Aldi do a really lovely bottle of port for about £7.
Other than that, Cockburns or Taylor's are nice and around £10-15 a bottle.

scaryteacher · 28/11/2019 23:44

Fonseca Tawny, or a bottle of Otima (which is also very good).

I also like DeLaForce when I can get it.

soupforbrains · 29/11/2019 11:56

Thank you everyone! far more knowledge from all of you than I could scramble together. I am now armed with a list of options and will go hunting when I'm shopping on Monday (payday)
