Happy Thanksgiving!

Just a Thanksgiving shout out to my fellow Yanks and anyone else who enjoys the sentiment of this lovely holiday, where we gather with family and friends and reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. May we cultivate that sense of gratitude all year long.

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. It is surprising how contented one can be with nothing definite—only a sense of existence.” – Henry David Thoreau

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours too.

Is your turkey in yet?. Im having a cup of tea and then off to make the stuffing and get it in the oven. 3 out of my 4 kids will be here later and the 4th will try to swing by after going to her partners parents for dinner. It will be a chill day. Well until Dd2 discovers that Ds2 is planning on watching football on the TV in her room all afternoon as its the only TV in the house Grin

The turkey might be in, but we're going to my brother's house for the meal so I made pies last night (apple and pecan) and now I'm doing holiday mashed potatoes with butter, sour cream and cream cheese. We're also bringing brie cheese, breads from the posh bakery and shrimp.

It sounds like you'll have a full house!

Happy thanksgiving! We are at the in-laws so no cooking involved on our side (also no booze other than a very small and mostly decorative glass of wine). I am lucky to have delightful in-laws, who are generous and loving hosts.

Our 4yo is having an amazing time with his US cousins, who are very close in age. He has no siblings, so multiple-day cousin-time is particularly special.

Over the last few days we have had a couple of lovely conversations with him about what he is thankful for. The list includes: mummy and daddy, my friends, transformers, cake, and sunshine.

Happy Thanksgiving to our friends in the south, from us up in the Great White North

MissConductUS: those mash potatoes sound amazing!

As someone who moved to the US as an adult, can I ask you all for your opinion on mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows as a savory dish? I used to assume this was a joke food item. But last time we went to relatives for thanksgiving, it was served in all seriousness. I think it may be being prepared again today....

MissConductUS · 28/11/2019 16:19

@EllaEllaE - they are amazing! My brother always makes me confirm that I"m bringing them. PM me if you want the recipe. They are really simple to make.

Mashed sweet potatoes are indeed a common and traditional dish for today's meal. I personally don't care for them as I find them too sweet to go with the rest of the meal.

Another part of the tradition though is to prepare a lot of choices for veg (sweet corn, green beans, creamed baby onions, mashed potatoes, etc.) and they are all passed around and you take only what you fancy. There's no obligation or judgement should you just take one or two.

I'm a New Yorker. Where in the US did you wind up?

Happy Thanksgiving! I’m watching the Macy’s parade while I prep the dinner. As a new American, I love this holiday. Celebrating family and thinking of all the things you have to be grateful for, it’s brill!

Strokethefurrywall · 28/11/2019 16:25

Happy Thanksgiving y'all.

Londoner, living for over a decade on a very multi-cultural Caribbean Island that happily hijacks every worldwide celebration we can.
At the office but have full thanksgiving feasts being delivered and taking full advantage of the US being quiet.

I'd love to be up north celebrating in the cold but have to put up with the warm tropical breeze instead!

Looking forward to the pumpkin pie, and green bean casserole. Marshmallow and sweet potatoes freaked me out the first time I saw them but I got strangely addicted.

For me, it's the kick off to the holiday season and a month of feasting! Have fun everyone!

MrsCatBasket · 28/11/2019 16:46

creamed onions? Oh that sounds divine,,,, does anyone have a recipe, please? I'm in the UK but may I wish all of you in USA Happy Thanksgiving. My daughter moved over to California a couple of years ago and she has been made to feel so welcome.

MissConductUS · 28/11/2019 17:04

MrsCat this is the recipe I use:

Quick update: I've gotten DD (17) to finally get dressed and we're ready to pack up the car to head to DB's. DS (19) has of course been ready for hours. My two nephews (one with his wife and 6 month old son, and two huge golden retrievers) have all arrived. It should only take us 45 minutes or so to get there. Am taking my Kindle to keep an eye on MN. Smile

By the way, anyone who wants the recipe for the holiday mashed potatoes is welcome to it. The offer wasn't exclusive to Ella.

I'm thankful for my lovely DH of 22 years, my two great kids, the fact that DS is thriving at Uni and DD is totally on top of her applications to uni. I'm also getting a new car for Christmas. Grin The dealer rang yesterday to tell us it will be in on 20 Dec.

Thank you all for the warm wishes and thoughts!

Happy Thanksgiving - I've got all my family here including DD back from college, and it's lovely.

It does feel like the start of the holiday season - the fun month before winter really takes hold.

We are having a bone-in turkey breast - that's as close as I'll get to cooking a turkey. I was going to do mashed potatoes in the crockpot but my children are demanding roasties.

I'm sure a lot of football will be watched later.

I am a Scot living in Scotland but we celebrate Thanksgiving. I have family in the States and Canada. We usually holiday there once a year too.

I love the whole Fall vibe that you have going on. When we go to the States in October I spend a ridiculous amount of time walking round looking at all the lovely Fall/Autumn decorations. I now have a great collection of pumpkins and turkeys, mainly courtesy of Williams and Sonoma and Pottery Barn.

Winter can be long, dark and harsh in this part of the world so any excuse for a celebration is ok by me. We also have St Andrew's Day to look forward to on Saturday so I shall add a little tartan to the mix and then it will be the countdown to Christmas.

I would love the potato recipe. I wonder if it would go with haggis?

AcrossthePond55 · 28/11/2019 18:17

Happy Thanksgiving to all! Turkey went in the oven about an hour ago. Dinner will be around 2 pm.

This will be our first year without DS1 and DiL as they are at her father's this year. I guess they've had a 'distant' relationship and this is the first time he's ever invited her so they felt they should go. DS1 says he's not happy to miss my stuffing and pies, but it's the right thing to do.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day and eats themselves into a coma. 😆🍗🍗🥗🥂🍷🦃🦃

MoreNiceCereal · 28/11/2019 18:22

Happy pie day! We've had a rough year in my family so we are focusing on making new traditions. No turkey, but pie for dinner and pies for dessert. The DC are excited to tuck in. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

MissConductUS · 29/11/2019 16:39

@Belindabelle - I just PM'd you with the holiday mashed potato recipe.
