On the way home this evening the road was blocked by police, ambulance and behind the police car, in the middle of the road, a helicopter. DS (10, but learning age of around 8) and DD (7) in the car both interested by it wanted to know why it was there etc. I said there must have been an accident and they would probably be flying the person to hospital in the next city. It was right outside a large supermarket and pedestrian crossing.

DS has been talking all evening about the helicopter in the road and asking what happened. Turns out someone had been stabbed.

Would you explain (and how)? Or just leave it as a vague someone got injured?

At that age I'd leave it that someone was injured as a stabbing is a particularly brutal thing to have to explain to a child.

I might not be right though; most of what I do/don't explain to the DC depends on their age and how much I feel it's suitable, but I'm always honest with them if I can be.
