He has Alzheimer's. He was a brilliant and multi-talented man. So sad. He was 85.

I was a toddler when Beyond the Fringe was on in the West end and then went to the USA, but I have a recording of the West End version and know a lot of it nearly off by heart. Four brilliant talents there - Jonathan Miller, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett. Only Alan Bennett left now.

Thinking of his family. Flowers

Had. Sigh. Why do typos only appear after I've hit send?

It's very sad 😔. He had such a wide and immense intellect. Apparently he hated the term 'polymath', but he undoubtedly was one. So very sad that he had to suffer Alzheimer's (like my lovely DM)

Oh Sad I saw the name and could place his face , first thing I thought was "He was a Doctor" but I remember seeing him on TV in years gone by .

Very talented man.

DGRossetti · 27/11/2019 15:29

Only a few days ago I was mentioning seeing "The Body In Question" back in the 70s on BBC. Fascinating series (which ended in an autposy - much less showy than Gunther von Hagens ....)

RIP.

I'll also remember his description of Mrs Thatcher having elocution lessons as a "perfumed fart" on (I think) Parkinson.

IamWaggingBrenda · 27/11/2019 15:53

I was so sad to read the news this morning. I loved “The Body in Question” (thank you @TGRossetti, I had forgotten the name). Also saw his Hamlet in London years ago. So talented, he was a true Renaissance man.

tobee · 27/11/2019 16:28

I saw his production of The Mikado with Eric Idle many years ago now. Still remember it fondly.

Now Clive James as well. Bad day for ex Cambridge Footlights members.

tobee · 27/11/2019 16:28

Weirdly I was thinking about Alan Bennett yesterday and worrying about him. Sad

missclimpson · 27/11/2019 16:30

So sad to lose both of them in one day. Brilliant, erudite and funny.

Slumberly · 27/11/2019 16:33

Yes this is really sad. Did you know he was best friends with Oliver Sacks at school? Can you imagine what those playground conversations would have been like?

A great man.

maras2 · 27/11/2019 16:41

Just seen that Clive James has died too.

Slumberly · 27/11/2019 16:46

Bloody hell - you're right. It's a real day for it. FUCK NOVEMBER. Sad

BarbaraStrozzi · 27/11/2019 16:50

:-(

Both brilliant, but I particularly loved Clive James (he had been ill with terminal cancer for quite a while now). Bugger.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/11/2019 16:59

Clive James as well. That's also very sad. Sad

a sad day. I also remember 'the body in question' in the days when documentaries told you stuff and weren't all about arty information-free shots. (Yes you, Prof Cox...)

And Clive James and his glorious put downs.

Legends, both. But it sounds like suffering is over.

ForalltheSaints · 27/11/2019 18:19

I saw him on the tube when he was directing a play. I remember him as very tall. Sad t read of his last days and may he rest in peace.

Slumberly · 27/11/2019 19:30

@mencken There is a really good book of the Body in Question that has a lot of the pictures and text from the TV series. I'm not sure how widely available it is - I got it from a charity shop years ago.
